kypade wrote: Goldie, no one denies that you thought it wasnt a comedy. (Have yuo seen it, btw? What did you think? If not, check it out, you'd prolly like it.)
It's just that, to most of us, the trailer was straight up dumb comedy type, complete with three ladies slipping on a christmas breakfast thing. When we see that, and all you really get out of it is that its about a fiancee not being accepted into her future husband's family, all that, plus the fact that its edited very much like a comedy film would be (highlighting all the one liners and such and not much of the heavy stuff), people just tend to assume 'oh, hey, looks like a comedy.' Plus, did you ever see this trailer with a crowd? It got tons of laffs...(i dont laff at movies anymore, so i wouldnt really know.) The bottom line is, the trailers seemed far lighter than the final film came out to be.
All that said, I am partly in agreement with Maverikk. (didnt i already say this in this thread? if so, i cant find it, stop me when i get repetitve.) I definitely see this as a comedy moreso than a drama, and i DO think the comedy is more prevelant than the seriousness. Even when it does get into some deep waters, there always tends to be something there to bring it out of the "omg, wow, that was depressing'' kinda mood into a ''wow, yknow, they handled that really well and still managed to make me not feel horrible."
I guess thats what it comes down to for me...it defintiely has plenty of substance and is certainly not wall to wall laughs, but it is handled in such a way that i never felt "this is a drama" and it ends up one of the more funny films of the year.
But n real life even in depressing situations peopel finds ways to laugh, when I htink of a comedy i think Some Like it Hot, Tootsie, Office Space, Clueless, not The Family Stone.
Taje the dinner scene where makes hte comments about not wanting a gay son, yes the scenes starts out as funy, but the power of hte scnees comes from the drama, so while the scene has humour, I wouldn't call it funny, because the weight of the scene lies in the drama. When I hink of the scene, I don't even remmebre the humourous lines at hte beginning, i remember the families faces oas Parker talked, I remember Keaton comforting her son at the end.

I saw this a month ago already, but I still remember walking out of the screening room amazed and impressed from what I saw. I heard rumors and saw early reviews at the time that it was supposed to be more than a "splapstick" comedy, and I had my suspicions about Diane Keaton's plot "secret" (well, it's a home for the holidays movie afterall) but the second part still got me. And the way Bezucha dealt with it..
But with this I sound like I didn't enjoy the humorous parts (some of them based on "slapstick", yeah - what's so wrong with that?)- I loved them actually, even the kitchen scene - which is still better than anything in.. say... Cheaper by the Dozen
As for the dinner sequence, it's definitely up there in contention for the best scene of the year - at least until I see movies like Brokeback Muntain, A History of Violence, etc.
The cast is really amazing and truly deserves a SAG nom over any movie I've seen so far (even Crash), and it's too bad if Keaton ends up snubbed just because of the reviews coming from the "disenchanted cynics", like someone said.. I still remember her last line (and the way she said it) a month later..
So what if all ends up pretty much tied up? I think it's stupid to criticize the movie just for that... I mean.. these are the same critics that love Frank Capra, right?
One of the year's best, for sure.

This movie will have stunning word-of-mouth over Christmas is the opinions here are any indication.

With In Her Shoes and The Family Stone, 2005 was a great year for "chick flicks".
I'm allergic to Jennifer Aniston so Rumour Has It would really need to win me over to join those two.

I don't think Rachel is the best thing since sliced bread. She is one of my favorites, but much of the reason why I like her is that she has chosen great movies thus far (Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers, Red Eye, Family Stone, and The Notebook, the last of which I have yet to see). I don't think she's THE best actress, but like I said, she's one of my favorites. An Oscar nomination is inevitable in the future, but not for anything she has done yet. Well... maybe The Hot Chick. Robbie Schneider deserved all the awards he could get for that one. Except a Razzie.

Well to me, she made Mean Girls and Red-Eye. Without her, I probably wouldn't have liked the movies *that* much.
She's not bad in The Hot Chick either btw, though she doesn't appear very much in it.

I think the quality projects she's been involved in within the last few years definitely makes her stand out. Most actresses don't have that level of success or quality in their entire careers.

Most actresses barely have any level of success. Or any noteworthy success.
Mean Girls, Notebook, Red Eye, Wedding Crashers, am I missing some grand opus on her resume?

McAdams possesses a rare appeal and star quality that few, if any, young actresses currently working today. That combined with the facts that she's gorgeous and has not appeared in a bad movie yet (The Hot Chick doesn't count) is what's making her so popular, imo.

I almost reported you to the mods. What the fuck is this new feature?
Anyway, no one said that these films were huge advances in cinema. Personally, I thought all (except Notebook, which I haven't seen) were great movies, but I also gave Saw II an A, so please don't take me seriously. Mav probably has a better reason as to why she's great. Listen to him.

There just seems to be a lot of unfounded hype surrounding this chick.
I heard her boob did a peak-a-boo during the red carpet premiere of Family Stone.
Now that's noteworthy. Beat that Portman.

Maybe based on her sudden rise she wants to take a break or needs a rest
or
as I heard she was dating her notebook co-star, maybe she is in LOVE and she is thinking more of guys or other things than movies.
got this on a quick web search for anyone who wants proof >
Welcome to Made For Eachother. This is the one and only fanlisting for the real life relationship between the actors, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Ryan and Rachel starred in the hit movie, The Notebook, together. I heard Gosling and McAdams are getting married. That explains why their on-screen chemisty in 'The Notebook' was so good.
Married, that is interesting and I guess it explains why she has no future movies lined up yet.

I guarantee that she's a future Oscar nominee and perhaps even a winner. I'll bet it happens very soon, depending on if she lines anything up. Perhaps that's why she doesn't have any films lined up, because she has a great sense for what's good and there isn't much right now that she can find.

Which is it, she'll be nominated very soon or will wait and wait for the right project? You can't do both.

Sorry but I had big problems with your review - and that was just from the first paragraph. I did notice some other thing that I didn't like later on but I will just start here.
****************************
’Family Stone’ an Awkward, Heartwarming Film
When it comes to holiday films, there are a few things that everyone expects to see in them. Generally these include such mainstays of the genre as Santa Clause, holiday cheer, family love and a happy ending. Unfortunately, all of these are missing from the latest entry into the genre, The Family Stone. That is not to say the film is not good, as it is certainly a delightful, albeit awkward, film.
***************************
- didn't think it was awkward.
- big deal that the movie didn't have Santa Claus > totally not needed > and this was covered with the gift giving ( the mother's picture anyway )
- felt the movie had holiday cheer
- movie definitely had family love > and isn't this covered by the word heartwarming above ?
- felt the movie had a happy ending > yes the mother passed away but the whole family was together, connected by the mother's picture and probably a much better family at the end.

Grade: C+
The movie was kind of all over the place for me. The commericals did not portray what the movie turned out to be.
The movie goes from slapstick comedy, to tears and heavy drama.
Plus the relationship's we're really pushed on us..and pushed too fast.
It was enjoyable, hence the C+ grade.

Awkwardly written, awkwardly directed. There's a good idea in there, bu Bezucha was about 6 or 7 drafts away from it. Also I thought I heard that Claire Danes was in this as a character named "Julie," but I didn't see her. I must have mis-heard. Furthermore, Dermot Muloney's romance with that blonde extra was a bit hard to swallow.
Still, I thought Keaton's subplot was handled surprisingly well (The montage set to Judy Garland singing from MEET ME IN ST LOUIS was the only moving scene in the film) and Craig T. Nelson deserves a lot of praise. Excellent performance.
But this was a major, major disappointment.

think about the bolded above alittle more > there is something there you are missing > hint: doesn't Claire Danes have blond hair.

B+ A heartwarming holiday dramedy with some fine performances. It dragged a bit in some places around the middle of the movie and I would have liked to have seen further development of Claire Danes' character. Otherwise, it was great.
