INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE
I wasn't super excited for this film but the first trailer had me interested. After seeing the film, however, it just didn't do much for me. It had nice action, nice visuals and some funny moments but it all felt very meh. I was really turned off by all the forced romance between characters. That was so fake and not even funny when it was trying to be. I did like the cast overall but they were left with just really nasty dialogue throughout. The film did miss Will Smith or having a really big star to help carry the film. Overall, it was a disappointment.

 Re: Independence Day: Resurgence
Saw it. I think this was given what I'm going to call the Batman v Superman treatment. The film feels like it has hacked to death in the editing room. That should've been a red flag going in. The original film I think was 140 minutes long, with another 10-15 tacked on in the extended version. This sequel runs 110 minutes without any credits. Any sequel that is 30-50 minutes shorter than the original sends up a red flag to me. Superman IV, Men in Black II, the results never seem to end well, and they don't end well here, which is a shame because they're some cool ideas here.
There are two large problems with the film. The first is that unlike the original, which took its sweet ass time character building and making us care for the characters and creating tension (I think we at least got two dates JULY 1, JULY 2 before the first attack) for some reason that's all tossed out the window (BvS edit). Seeing as the film has 3/4th's of a new cast, that's a gigantic mistake. I think it assumes that because these are the kids of the characters we enjoyed from the first film, we're going to love them just the same. Nope. Which leads into problem number two...
Because we don't give a shit about the characters, the entire film feels weightless. Are we supposed to care and not laugh when Vivica A. Fox gets killed? Her son hardly seems to care and he's supposed to be a fucking hero! It's such a throwaway moment that I was convinced she was going to somehow survive at the end. Same for the President and the entire chain of command. First of all, why are they all together? Second, the scene is shot in such an inept way that I also expected her to survive.
Is the Bill Pullman sacrifice supposed to be like the Randy Quaid moment from the first film? It isn't. He just blows up, the daughter rolls a tear, and it's back to fighting. A former President sacrifices himself for the good of humanity and he doesn't even get a moment at the end of the film? No, because we get Data setting up a sequel that's never going to happen. And what's hilarious about that moment is that the film thinks the audience is going to react like, "Awwww, fuck yeah! Intergalactic war! That's fucking awesome." Meanwhile, the real reaction is either a "Meh", at best, or more likely, "Please, fuck no. No more!".
Will Smith would've added much needed charisma, but by turning down $50 million, he somehow dodged a bullet. Most of the moviegoing public seems to have dodged one too.Too bad for the rest of us. On the bright side, we got a bright shiny new Blu-ray of the original. Just watch that again.

 Re: Independence Day: Resurgence
It wasn't a "good" movie in the slightest but as popcorn entertainment I had a good time. I thought the first was obviously leagues better but this wasn't terrible. I liked some of the performances and the shift at the end to a kaiju movie was random but entertaining. Of the cast Jeff Goldblum and Maika Monroe were best in show. I don't know, I thought it was solid for what it was. B-

The whole thing felt...tired. That's the most fitting description in my head. Trying too hard, too desperately.

I was expecting a shit film and I got one. It met my expectations. Should I have given it an A because of this?
"Popcorn flicks" can be awesome. This was not.

 Re: Independence Day: Resurgence
Let's skip over that and go to why would you watch/pay/download a film that you thought looked like shit? You don't live in a theater like Sparrow apparently does. Why bother?

I saw Independence Day: Resurgence as part of a weekend trip to visit stuffp. I certainly thought it was shit, but he really wanted to see it, and when we meet up we like to watch movies and discuss them. It would have been awfully rude of me to refuse to see the only big Hollywood film in release at the time. What's your excuse?

It was an irrelevant answer to my response, yes, hence why I wanted to clarify that you actually understood it.
