I am actually surprised that so many here found that movie not to be funny. I found myself laughing outloud quite a couple of times throughout the film. It is not up to the level of Wedding Crashers or even Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but it is still a highly enjoyable comedy with a truly good lead. I was surprised by Carrell actually. I never thought too much of him as a comedian, but he proved me wrong here. He plays the roles of Andy with the right amount of naivety and charme. The suppoorting cast is pretty good too, especially the three guys who play Andy's friends. Catherine Keener has a nice appearance as well, but she has been better before.

The movie has plenty of gags and admittedly not of them work. But considering the huge amount of them, it is still surprising how many of them are actually funny. What was really weird is the film's ending when all start singing and dancing. It certainly was for humorous purposes as well, but didn't sit too well with me. It just came across as...weird.

To put it in a nutshell, The 40-Year-Old Virgin is not a milestone of the genre, but a very nice addition. Steve Carrell carries the movie on his shoulders and pulls it off very well. The screenplay is well-written, but not all of the gags work, especially not in the second half of the movie.

Ok... so, I think I just finished watching the uncut version, but I don't remember seeing one single new scene... :| Can someone fill me in?

I really like the movie, though.

I think when Andy had that porn star (Stormy) dream/fantasy sequence. It was also a hella long scene.

David: Hey, Paula.
Paula: Yeah?
David: I gotta tell you something. I'm really excited about it. Uh, for the first time, today, I woke up, I came to the store, and I - I feel confident to say to you that if you don't take this Michael McDonald DVD - that you've been playing for two years straight - off, I'm going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain!
Paula: David, what do you suggest we play?
David: I don't care. Anything! I would rather - I would rather watch "Beautician And The Beast". I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothin' against him, but if I hear "Yah Mo B There" one more time, I'm going to Yah Mo Burn This Place To The Ground.

FUNNIEST. MOVIE. EVER.

Great movie. Paul Rudd needs his own. 5 trillion times funnier than Wedding Crashers, and 6 billions times funnier than any of the posters who didnt think this movie was all that funny.... COMBINED!

Ok, so that's a hyperbole. It's not a "non-stop laugh riot," but is still really funny, and offers more than other comedies (like Anchorman, while funnier than 40 year old virgin, did not bring as much to the metaphorical table). The best comedies are those that can blend comedy and plot. Maybe it's because when Im 40 I'll totally be able to relate to this movie, but it just hit all the right notes for me.

I enjoyed the film and it was laugh out loud funny too. The only parts I didn't care for was the ridiculous dance number to age of aquarius. That was a downer.

I'm still definitley in the "It's an enjoyable, sweet comedy, but one of the best comedies ever? Whattt?" camp. It's mildly funny and a good way to pass time... I can't see anything more in it than that. Doesn't hold a candle to Wedding Crashers IMO, let alone that best comedies ever class of Holy Grail, Airplane, Team America, South Park, etc.

Well its better then Wedding Crashers for one thing. No 3rd act collapse in this one and the supporting players never let Carrell down. Best Comedy of 2005

Boy I've never seen Wedding Crashers catch so much heat from posters at this site.. What gives?? Is it because it grossed the money it did or what??

Nah. I liked Wedding Crasher's overall but the way it fell apart in the last 30 minutes didn't help its cause.

I think Im one of the few that actually liked the last 30 minutes. (particularly his depression phase)

Though I still liked 40 Year Old Virgin more. (because I can relate to it more! ..... I think I've said too much)

I liked Wedding Crashers better initially, but this one has grown on me since. The last third of WC just ruins it for me; I hate Owen Wilson so, so much and his emo phase is so incredibly annoying. Virgin is much more memorable.

OMG - this can't be happening! dolcevita is the poster here at WOKJ that I have the utmost repect for. dv's opinions especially in the more esoteric regions of the sub-forum of "Foreign and Independent Film" is impeccable.

But tonight, I have read her review of The 40 Year Old Virgin...

I am aghast. How?!? How could someone so seemingly astute miss the perfection that was this movie. What life experiences did we not share? GOOD GOD - is it a strictly gender thing!!!?!

Right now I can barely type the username of dolcev...

Gaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Love this film. Hilarious!!! I only hope Knocked Up gets close to this in greatness.

And much much better than the overrated Wedding Crashers!

Grade : A

A strong B+. Everyone involved is in top form, especially Carell, Keener, and Rudd. So many hilarious moments.

It was hilarious enough as a collection of skits, but this tried to be something more and failed. The characters all irritated me, and the story was an example of high concept, poor execution. If they had just stuck with the comedy, it would have worked, as the romance - in my opinion - fell flat.

C+

It gets better with another viewing, but I still stand by most of what I said. The first half is absolute brilliant hilarity - the funniest move of its kind since Anchorman. But once the romance starts developing it screeches to a halt and never matches the brilliance of the pure comedy. The characters grew on me, with Seth Rogen definitely standing out, and it's incredibly quotable, but not amongst the top comedies ever for me. And the end musical number... I don't get. Not funny at all.

Just watched this again. Originally my grade was B-ish, I thought it was a sweet-hearted but overrated comedy, but this time I felt totally different for some reason, I almost died laughing... couldn't breathe, tears in my eyes. I don't ever remember a movie growing on my that much in between viewings, let alone the 2nd to 3rd. Guess my tastes changed that much from 15-ish to 17. Definitley one of the funniest and quickest comedies out there, it never stops.

A

I loved the little lines in this movie, it seemed a character two said something after every scene that was so perfect, lines that wouldn't even crackle a joke on paper or if I quoted it, just off-hand remarks. Seth Rogan is also pure gold here, he's getting right up there for most awesomest comedian actors.

It has really become a film that I can watch over and over again, no matter what part of the film is on tv I can keep it on and kill time, thats when you know a film is a classic.

This movie really does grow on you. In 2005, I gave it a B+ and I vaguely remember saying I thought it and Wedding Crashers (the two huge comedies of that year) were equally funny. I still really enjoy WC, but I'd practically consider 40 Year Old Virgin a modern day classic. And this is coming from someone who actually thought Knocked Up was even better, so...I <3 Judd Apatow.

Hmm, after all your comments...maybe I need to see this again. I gave it a B+ as well, but remember finding Wedding Crashers quite a bit funnier...

Virgin gets better with age, while Crashers gets worse. And that third act with Owen Wilson being all depressed is darkly ironic now.
