Completely average summer popcorn flick.
My biggest complain is how much damage Superman caused, The destruction of NYC in The Avengers seems realistic and nothing compared to this.
Iron Man shooting down that CRUISE SHIP SIZED flying turtle over the middle of the city seems realistic and small....?

Except he doesn't "cause" a good bit of it. And saying The Avengers damage is realistic is BS. The Iron Man bomb save is a clear example.

You silly fuck-wits. He is saying the destruction here is so absurd, even the outsize insanity of The Avengers feels realistic by comparisons.

Re: Man of Steel
It's fine. As could be seen from a miles away, Zack Snyder makes a film that's aesthetically beautiful but sucks at emotion, at making its characters feel like real people instead of line/action delivery devices and at building a story with real crescendos and decrescendos. At the same time it's so singularly obsessed with action scenes and visual masturbation that it becomes unique compared to superhero films. But as is the case with 300 and Watchmen as well, not enough to really stand out as a full and conscience operatic experience, an artistic gear shift or two down I suppose from that. Likely from lack of talent from Snyder, lack of will or both.
I felt ok watching it, but undoubtedly the type of film that will look worse the farther I get from the theatre experience

The main issue really is that with the Avengers, there was more fun with its destruction than in MoS. So people just don't really get as bothered by the destruction in Avengers.
No, the main issue is that the Avengers are actively trying to help people, whereas Superman is hellbent on taking out Zod and willingly causes much of the destruction.

Interesting analysis of Man Of Steel from Max Landis - - screenwriter of Chronicle, Superman expert, and son of John...

I don't give a shit about Superman. He is even more boring than Wolverine, an empty box with super powers.

People don't seem to realize that 75% of the destruction was caused by the Terraforming. The city was already in rubble, and THEN Superman fights Zod.

Man of Steel
Saw it again tonight with a few friends. Liked it again too. The excessive punching didn't bother me this time, which made it better, but two other things I noticed were that...
1. Cavill has a constant frown. 2. The ease and quickness with which people are laughing and joking after the destruction of the city. "Hey Lois, I have two tickets to the game" etc etc. Wait a minute, your city was just demolished and you almost died in the process, why are you so happy so quickly? and how did it get built back up so quickly?
But, again, these are minor qualms. Still an A-
Such an event movie. The music is almost perfection, Costner and Crowe are fucking awesome, the opening 30 minutes are golden, and Superman is the best one yet. I had tears almost ready to come out again. Such an emotional scene.

Anything is better than "release the Kraken".
But I agree, I slightly cringed too, but it didn't bother me at all. I thought it would have been better to say "release the teraformers" or something a but more technical. Instead, "world engine" sounds like something an 8 year old made up.

Did I miss the '20 minutes later' sign? I think the epilogue is set several months after the fight.

Re: Man of Steel
So if there was scenes addressing the damage (and these "casualties" that aren't shown), or if Superman's fight with Zod was isolated what would be the main thing people would complain about for this movie?

Mediocre acting by the two leads.

Yeah I think Amy Adams is nothing less than terrific in this, as she is in every performance. She just doesn't have any chemistry with Henry Cavill.
Also, good god, how long is thread going to be? What's the longest review thread on the site?

-Failure to provide the big payoff that Pa Kent had built up (i.e. the answer to the question of "are we alone in the universe" and how that will impact society).
-Redudant action with the Zod sequence (Smallville sequence is legit though)
-Lack of enough fun (I think the film has more fun than people say but it still could of used more)
-Inclusion of Lolis Lane (just felt forced)
All fair points.
I guess the "lack of fun" is why so many reviews go on about it being humorless but I think having the tone be Dark Knight trilogy-esque worked. (did people find those fun? Great, yes but i dunno about fun) I liked the lack of dopeyness here that was abundant in Superman Returns.

Each of Nolan's Batman films had far more humor than MoS.

I disagree. In fact, I don't think there was ENOUGH action.

Several months? That's not nearly enough.
How long did it take for them to rebuild the Twin Towers? Years, and they still haven't done it.
It's not a big deal for me, because the rest of the movie is extremely good, it's just an observation.
