I enjoyed this, but it's not that good. Ewan McGregor was easily the best part. And what was with the awful Windows Movie Maker animation at the beginning?

 Re: Jack the Giant Slayer
I generally liked the montage showing the crown evolve over time, but that kid with the Tucci-esque gap in his teeth was lame, I agree. And seems likely to rip off Sherlock as well.

 Re: Jack the Giant Slayer
The ending is great, indicating a never-ending cycle of people trying to steal the crown and release the giants (and the fun idea of the giants still existing far above modern London). Singer and the writers could have gone for a far easier, nowhere near as imaginative ending. The one they devised is perfect.

Jack the Giant Slayer
It was fun, I suppose, but overall too infantile for my liking. The effects were good on the giants, and the action that involved them was good (like the final battle and throwing trees and humans around), but I wanted more gore, more chomping humans heads off etc. It was just too safe and PG-rated. The scene when they first get up the beanstalk and Jack hides in the water, that whole scene was pretty great, and the kitchen scene was quite nice too (if a little light-hearted for my taste).
Nicholas Hoult is one of the worst actors working today, Eleanor Tomlinson was pretty boring as Isabelle, I just couldn't take Lovejoy seriously as the King, but Ewan McGregor was good as the chief knight. Stanley Tucci also wasn't bad.
The music was nothing unique, the shots and effects were passable and the general atmosphere was that it was made for children. I enjoyed parts, but this movie, while I enjoyed the scope and giants' effects and demeanor, will not sit long in the memory. The comedic moments worked about 50% of the time for me. Nicholas Hoult is so bad at acting, and he ends up saving the day even though the focus seemed to not be on him fo most of it. And the romantic kiss on the way down from the beanstalk, that was ridiculous. The plotpoints and turns were very generic and nothing new.
C+
PS: I rather liked the ending. That little kid looked like Tucci.

 Re: Jack the Giant Slayer
My visit to see Jack the Giant Slayer was mixed. I didn't enjoy Nicholas hoult, but I did grab a huge A Good Day to Die Hard poster as they were changing it over to Oz: The Great and Powerful. So I'm going to frame it and put it on the wall. Got to start plastering the flat with some movie imagery.

Forgot to mention earlier how after about 1/3 of the film, I predicted that the main giant would be killed by Jack putting a seed into his mouth (because someone mentioned about not mixing it with water), and low-and-behold, what happened? Just that.
Good effects on that part, by the way. And that little second head on the giant was quite weird and strangely humourous. But the film didn't need to be in 3D at all. We saw a trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful before the film and even that had more use of 3D in that the whole Jack feature.

 Re: Jack the Giant Slayer
Bryan Singer is an incredibly inconsistent filmmaker, but fortunately Jack the Giant Slayer is one of his good ones. This is a well made retelling of the classic fairytale that made good use of cgi and quality actors. Sure, it went on a bit too long - - I could have been happy if it ended when the beanstalk was chopped down - - but it was great to see a tale so well told in an old school style. (Not quite as good as 2010's superb Gulliver's Travels, but surely a worthy double bill companion!) 8 out of 5.

Eh. I've endured worse ones i.e. Campaign and The Watch
I'll only do it if the films are similar in some way. Themed double/triples are the best.

 Re: Jack the Giant Slayer
I really liked this film, it has its flaws but I found it very entertaining, Bryan Singer proved me once again that he's good at his job... I know there wont be a sequel because of its disappointing BO performance but I would have loved to see the giants destroying London in our era B+ And YES, Jack is better than OZ!

I perhaps overvalued this a bit. I do find it incredibly fun and well-crafted, though. I am sad it fared so poorly at the box office.

They'd already changed the title and bumped it back from being one of their summer tentpoles, so they most likely figured they would be taking enough of a hit with the film that releasing it a week before a huge Disney flick was a moot point. I'll rent it and watch it at some point. I've liked every Bryan Singer movie I've seen (the only one I haven't seen is Apt Pupil), so I'm expecting something that's at least entertaining.

With regard to Gulliver's Travels, I don't believe that is your actual opinion. Jack the Giant Slayer was better than Oz the Great and Powerful. Other than that, kind of boring and I fucking loathe characters picking their nose (the chef giant about to cook Ewan McGregor). Even reading about a character picking their nose annoys me. Stephen King does it on occasion. C
