 Re: Cellular
This is a very good film. Funny, action-packed, nicely paced, and just does its job well. Throughout it reminded me of Falling Down, which I'm surprised nobody else compared it to yet. The similarities are so obvious. The incident spree across the city, a retiring police officer with a nose for the truth (and not really wanting to retire), and both are set in or near Los Angeles. There's also a lot of phone usage in Falling Down, if I remember correctly. I also dig its retro mobile phone vibe, from its inescapable use of the tech at the time to even the end credits sequence. It was such a short period in my life, but it felt prominent, and so it's comforting to see. I also haven't seen William H. Macy in a film for a while. I miss that guy.
I also like films that make you think "what would I do?", and this does that. Not in any major way a la Sophie's Choice, but it connects on a certain level asing the question "how long would you stay on the line before hanging up believing it was a hoax".
It's not easy to make a film like this either, as proven by Premium Rush. So props to David R. Ellis.
