 Re: Pineapple Express
Even Superbad (a great movie by 'everyone else') didn't do anything to me. I doubt this one will.

Superbad - A The 40-Year-Old Virgin - A Knocked Up - A Pineapple Express - A- Forgetting Sarah Marshall - A- Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - C
I might need to watch Walk Hard again, but really, that's the only misstep for Apatow (again, I don't count Drillbit).

I don't really know if I would include Walk Hard in this group. I mean, if you include that, you may as well include Drillbit Taylor, Zohan, and Fun With Dick and Jane. The thing is Apatow actually wrote the script for Walk Hard. In the other films, he just kind of helped out.

 Re: Pineapple Express
Yeah, gotta say I was a bit disappointed, but I guess my expectations were too high. It was very funny, no doubt, but just didn't come to the level of the other Apatow films (we were pretty spoiled with Knocked Up & Superbad last year, heh). James Franco was awesome and Seth Rogen was his usual self, and the stuff from Danny McBride and Craig Robinson was great. I would've liked to see Gary Cole a bit more though.
I'd say B+ for now.
And my rankings:
1. Knocked Up - A+ 2. Superbad - A 3. The 40-Year-Old Virgin - A 4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - A 5. Pineapple Express - B+ 6. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - B+

 Re: Pineapple Express
It was overall a good time. Seth Rogen plays Seth Rogen playing a pothead (or, in other words, Seth Rogen). James Franco did really great, though not amazing. The first action scene in Red's house was actually a good bit of action. I was surprised by how tense it made me feel. It felt incredibly genuine because the guys weren't trained government operatives who have lost their memory, or whatever. The chase was also pretty good, and the action at the end was alright, but nothing was as good as that first fight scene (Rogen's showoff with the main bad guy was easily the standout of the third act though). The comedy worked throughout except for the homoerotic threads running throughout the entire movie. I'm not exactly homophobic; the jokes just seemed out of place. It worked in the scene when they were trying to un-duct-tape their hands, but otherwise it was really distracting. "I wanna be in you!" Other than that, all the jokes worked great. The action part of the story detract overall from the humor (which definitely shines out in this movie). B+

 Re: Pineapple Express
Well, this is kind of a big disappointment.
The trailers really sold me on this one, and I guess I shouldn't have been pre-judging it, but I went in expecting something fresh and original and weird and off-the-wall, and it really didn't deliver. It's got its moments of clever comedy, and it's certainly oddball enough at times, but I wish the stoner comedy had been emphasized at times and the action/buddy stuff left by the wayside. It made the third act incredibly big and loud and dumb, and it really took away from the comedy of the rest of the film.
And I'm not sure what DGG brought to the table, because there was almost no creativity or innovation in the direction at all. It was mostly a static camera with boring shot/reverse shot, with a couple of fancy editing transitions, too many fade-outs, and too much slow motion. Hell, the trailer was better edited than this. Maybe they should have got the trailer team to direct this; at least it would've looked cool and "Paper Planes" could've been included.
Franco really makes the film, as I didn't find Danny McBride all that funny and Rogen is just being Rogen - he's the new Will Ferrell: funny, but never changes his act. The dialogue is hilarious at times and downright lame at others. And that action-packed third act? Jesus Christ. What a total cop-out.
Perhaps I'm comparing this to the trailer too much and it's not as bad as I'm making it. I mean, it is really funny and I laughed a lot. But it's also totally fucking derivative. There's very little originality to be found. Is it Harold + Kumar? Is it Superbad? Is it Hot Fuzz? Is it some bizarre hybrid of all three that makes for a pretty schizophrenic comedy? I'm gonna go with the latter. Too bad.

I was surprised. It looked okay from the trailers, but it was very very funny. My sister and I loved it. So did the crowd.

 Re: Pineapple Express
Did anyone notice that Harold and Kumar 2 had a joke where they throw the cell phone into the woods for fear of satellites triangulating it and Pineapple Express had the same?
I sorta liked the movie. The leads were interesting. Perez/Cole were a waste of time and the subplot between the guy from The Office and his partner had a payoff that made little to no sense. Danny McBride was somewhat annoying and I blame him for it rather than the dialogue, as what he was saying had potential to be funny.
The action scenes were also utter cheese. Might have worked better with louder/more realistic gun fire noises. C+.

 Re: Pineapple Express
So when it was funny, it was hysterical at times. It definitely goes a little too overboard with the drug use, but I didn't mind it too much as I knew it would be like that. But god, the typical Apatow Drama scene was so forced it and long that I really thought the movie was loosing steam.
Luckily it picked up in the end and I was thoroughly entertained. It's been a good year for R-Rated Comedy.
Apatow movies:
40 Year Old Virgin A+ Superbad A+ Knocked Up A Pineapple Express A Forgetting Sarah Marshall B- Dewey Cox B-

 Re: Pineapple Express
The most ridiculous, retarded, and one of the funniest movies I have seen this year. Pineapple Express may not be Knocked Up, but it sure isn't Walk Hard. Pineapple Express runs on two things, weed and James Franco. Both make this movie more than it should have been. Yes its so relentless, overbearing, never ending, but thats why its so friggen hilarious. Seth Rogen, my future self, is hilarious as always, but James Franco makes this movie. Me and my buddy decided were going as them for Halloween. The last act looses a lot of steam, but my God was this so quotable and hilarious. It's a must see with friends, and also high which I'm doing both tomorrow. A-

 Re: Pineapple Express
BTW, I'd like to see the crossover movie featuring the sequel to Pineapple Express combined with the prequel to In Bruges.
It'd be interesting to see how Dale, Saul, and Red dealt with Ray, Ken, and Harry.
Definitely gotta ditch director David Gordon Green in favor of a director who understands humor - - I'd be happy to see what Martin McDonagh could do with it...

It wasn't as funny the second time around, but it is still a solid film. Both Knocked Up and Superbad are better.
