 Re: American Hustle
I mean I still like Lawrence as an actress but the whole media circus around her is getting annoying as hell and is taking effect on her performances.
Also, Lawrence needs to perform more like she did in Winter's Bone/SLP and less like the mediocre roles here and in Catching Fire to really state why she is a 3-time Oscar nominee at her age. But I'm worried the BuzzFeed train is taking over and Lawrence's popularity is going to continue having a negative effect on her strong start.

I stand by all of my posts regarding her very basic and normal appearance. But she was great in American Hustle. OK my mistake I had just noticed you being more complimentary towards her. I'm pretty happy all four main actors got noms today. Yep, it was nice.

Even in the end her existence is POINTLESS. JL killed it in SLP. Thats nice. Her character is totally unnecessary here. A meaty role as a loose cannon? You guys realize half of Hollywood could kill the role she was given, right? There is nothing special about it. At all. Some of it was kind of funny, but there was no skill needed. Jonah Hill in WOWS was hilarious, but it was a tremendous performance. JLaw is just acting obnoxious. Lindsay Lohan could have given a performance on the same level.

 Re: American Hustle
I liked the movie but something was just off.
Part of me thinks it was missing something. Another part thinks editing out the Lawrence subplot would have made a tighter and more focused, compelling film as opposed to the 'all over the place' one we got.

 Re: American Hustle
Chippy wrote: Holy shit you guys are fucking idiots. Shut the fuck up. Lawrence has 20 minutes worth of screen time & plays a character which ultimately has nothing to do with the films conclusion. Her story line of "she will not divorce Irving but in the end decides to divorce him" brings nothing to the plot. Her only 'purpose' in the film is to be there so Irving cannot run, something which could have easily been filled with "FBI all lover Irving & won't let him run". Aside from that already knowing Irving is not a bad guy kind of undermines his character arc, where at the end we learn he is not a total scum bag. It isn't even that Lawrence was bad. It's that a few dozen Hollywood actresses could have been just as effective. This was not SLP where Lawrence's personal charisma just makes the film. Julia Roberts, Rachel McAdam,s Anne Hatheway, Marion Cottilard, Scarlett Johanson, Emma Stone, Lindsay Lohan...so many actresses could have done exactly what Lawrence did in this film. I, for one, will never understand the obsession with giving actors accolades for playing bizarre, abnormal character for which there is no standard to measure them against. Ledger's Joker, Anton Chigurh - two prime examples. Does anybody on here know anybody like them? No? Oh, so that makes far easier to buy their 'acting' as they are playing someone extremely abnormal? Eckhart and Oldman were easily the most impressive actors in TDK because they were playing NORMAL people. The roles are far more difficult because they can't just ham up the screen & have it accepted. Understand the film thematically and it is easy to see how Rosalyn's character drained life from the film. Lawrence played her fine, but it's hardly impressive. This is the acting equivalent to playing quarterback a team with Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Julio Jones, and Rob Gronkowski, and then demanding a huge contract because you threw 30 touchdowns to them. Taken in context, the performance is not impressive whatsoever. Film would have been way better off focusing solely on Bale & Adams relationship & how Coopers corrupt ass fucks them up.

It's just sad and pisses me off that the performance that is going to talked about the most out of all Oscar nominated performances this year with people my age will be Lawrence's performance just because she is Jennifer Lawrence.

She gave the 5th best performance of the film, 6th best including Louis CK, 7th best including Robert De Niro, 8th best including Carmine's wife, 9th best including the guy who posed as the attorney, and 10th best including the extra who Irving cons out of 5 grand in the beginning of the film.

 Re: American Hustle
Just so we're clear: what does Lawrence's character being extraneous have to do with her performance?
Yeah, she doesn't have to be there, but at least she makes it fun. And it's not like the film is ungodly long with her in it.

No, they don't. Outside of her scenes, and Louis CK's, there is no fucking levity to this fucking film. She brought energy and humor to this piece of fucking drab.

 Re: American Hustle
The microwave scene and the scene where she explains that him getting his idea was because of her were two of the funniest scenes in the movie.

 Re: American Hustle
Lawrence has a few funny scenes, but they're not even funny due to her. The science oven is all Bale. It is kind of funny to see her take on that one situation change and talk about how she deserves credit, but it is hardly special. LIVE AND LET DIE & the scene where she goes to the gangster at the bar ARE cringeworthy. If AH wins best picture, it will be the most overrated BP in some time. The Dark Shape wrote: Just so we're clear: what does Lawrence's character being extraneous have to do with her performance? It is very difficult for a character to be very good when they have very little to do in the film. It's nice that she does well what she has, but her character is so limited that her impact is minuscule regardless. Her role was a meaty flashy one in vein of joker or Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny, but with 1/100th the plot relevance.

 Re: American Hustle
The shot of Amy Adams describing Bale's "confidence" while he sits in the chair with gut poking out of his unbuttoned shirt was easily the films funniest moment.

 Re: American Hustle
Jlaw not being there would completely change the entire movie. Bale and Adam's relationship would have no conflict and there would be no excuse for not bailing right when Cooper busts them. Is that what you want, excel? A fifteen minute movie? That's what American Hustle is without Jennifer Lawrence's character.
