Quote:
Witness for the Prosecution is a 1957 American legal mystery thriller film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton, and Elsa Lanchester. The film, which has elements of bleak black comedy and film noir, is a courtroom drama set in the Old Bailey in London and is based on the 1953 play of the same name by Agatha Christie. The first film adaptation of Christie's story, Witness for the Prosecution was adapted for the screen by Larry Marcus, Harry Kurnitz, and Wilder. The film was acclaimed by critics and received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It also received five Golden Globes nominations including a win for Elsa Lanchester as Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Additionally, the film was selected as the sixth-best courtroom drama ever by the American Film Institute for their AFI's 10 Top 10 list.

In the film, a man accused of killing a wealthy widow who had named him as the main beneficiary in her will undergoes a trial during which his wife testifies against him.

Post Re: Witness For The Prosecution
This film (deservingly) gets a ton of praise for the way the story twists and turns, especially the doozy at the end of the movie. However, what impressed me most was that it almost always managed to remain very funny despite the darkness of the main storyline. Being a black comedy ends up making the ending all that much better as otherwise one might say "well what was the point of it all then?" The cat/mouse game of the prosecution vs defense is equaled by the game between Wilfred and his nurse who so desperately wants him to stay healthy. And, you know, all the twists and turns are thrilling too if that wasn't clear. I kinda figured out what was happening slightly before the reveal, but that didn't make it any less brilliant. A classic worthy of its status.

9.5/10

Flava's review got me curious, so I decided to check out this old movie and yeah it's excellent. It's great in story telling and dialogue and I just quite love the setting in a historic/ documentary way. It's not of the all-time 12 Angry Men kind, but still one of the best films of its time for sure. The film is funny to an extent I didn't expect and Laughton, who I've never seen before in anything, gives a best actor type performance.
