The concept is the same, the execution is much different. Battle Royale almost justifies itself with its prologue, while Hunger Games is a much bigger good vs evil storyline. I love them both, but its easy to see why one would be much more popular than the other.

 Re: The Hunger Games
This movie is kind of hard to watch now that I've seen the far superior sequels, but it is still based on a very engrossing novel, which saves it from its bad direction. The action scenes and CGI are shit, and the ending is nothing like the book with the dogs being completely different and Peeta seemingly not knowing that Katniss didn't really like him. This is cleared up in the sequel, but it was very jarring when I first watched it. Also, most of the characters (especially Rue) are not given enough screen time to really be developed apart from Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, and Effie. Tucci as the host is wonderful, as is Lenny Kravitz as the stylist Cinna.
Of course, those are my nitpicks, but the film, for the most part is very good. I liked the trimming of the Madge character, she isn't really needed and it added a much needed plot thread between Katniss and Prim. The pre arena events are all essentially word for word from the book. The games is where the movie meanders a bit. Once Katniss finds Peeta, the rest of the film is too rushed to be really satisfying, as opposed to Catching Fire where I felt everything was able to breathe and most plot elements and characters got enough screen time to feel relevant.
While my initial love for this film has lessened when I realize how much better it could have been without Gary Ross, it is still pretty good. Nowhere near Catching Fire or Mockingjay: Part 1.

 Re: The Hunger Games
So I binged this series over the weekend and found the differences between Part 1 and Part 2 vs Mockingjay completely justified.
As for this movie its still a good edge of seat thriller from the world building aspects. The games are too short and not as exciting as the things before them. The whole love story aspect is cringe-worthy and not earned at all throughout the movie. Regardless its the surprises that the story keeps throwing in here and there which makes this a great watch. Still second best of the series.

 Re: The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is the weakest of the series, it's propped up by strong source material but the cinematography is among the worst in mainstream cinema history, and the low budget ruins the films climactic sequence with the dog mutations.

While we’re at it, Jesus smelled bad! The shaky cam was a terrible decision and makes the filmmaking seem so amateur in retrospect. Acting and script are what saves it. Sequels are way better.
