Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a 1958 American drama film directed by Richard Brooks. It is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Tennessee Williams adapted by Richard Brooks and James Poe. One of the top-ten box office hits of 1958, the film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Burl Ives.

So much fun to watch....especially the first two thirds or so. I actually don't think the Hays Code issues kill the movie here (as many seem to think), the evasion of directly addressing Brick's possible homosexual desires universalizes the film nicely, and it's not like you can't tell what the film is hinting at as to completely censor it.

Anyways, the play is better, but the film is still great, maintaining a lot of the play's integrity, and also just an eternally "cool" movie.

Love the movie. I should really watch it again sometime though. It's been a few years.

In some twisted, meta way, I think the manner in which the movie is forced to bend over backwards in order to blot out all that pesky gay stuff only reinforces and amplifies the theme.

That said, I still I would have preferred an adaptation that addressed it head-on.

Good movie. I haven't seen it in a couple years though.
