Its somewhat cathartic to see a movie at $70 M in the domestic market.

Things are getting better.

Godzilla (1998) was heavily hyped and supposed to be the biggest film of 1998. In some ways, this new Godzilla is making up for the massive disappoint of that year.

Having a second weekend that's almost as big as Tom & Jerry's opening weekend, heck yeah. Feeling really good about $100M+ total right now.

The strong holds for all of the non-Kaiju holdovers despite last weekend being a holiday weekend really shows how much space GvK probably took up at multiplexes last weekend. Next weekend will probably be similar with a total lack of new wide releases. I wonder if Raya can have some Croods 2-esque holds since there won't even be another PG-rated wide release until Spirit Untamed in eight weeks? Sony really shoulda left Peter Rabbit 2 in May like they were planning a month ago - a May 7 release would actually help them take advantage of Mothers Day as well.

Raya increasing this weekend is cool, would be nice if it got to 50m.

Voyagers was a strange film. Not awful but not one I think would find an audience now. Hate how Colin Farrell flops so many times but he still gets work so *shrug*

GvK is at $358m WW. Idk if it has enough steam to go to $500m but it truly did save the idea of movie theaters.

Everything outside of Godzilla had fantastic holds. It probably helped that many returned to theaters with Godzilla vs. Kong last week and might have enjoyed the experience of going to the movies again so much that they're returning to see something else already.

I agree with Jonathan that Peter Rabbit should have stayed where it was.

GvK's total is indeed great. I expect it to stabilize from next weekend and hold well once it is off HBO Max. I see a $100m total as 90% guarantee now. With a similar opening T&J will easily finish with $30m more so I think GvK can match that (different genres yes but better hype and WoM).

It's a shame that Sony pushed Peter Rabbit 2. It should have cleared $60m in this environment which h is what I expected out of it after the first movie.

Yeah I don't really think it will do much better with its summer release date. It could have been leggy without much competition for a while. Plus an Easter release date feels more appropriate than a summer one.
