Post Disney+ announcements (theater and premiere access releases)
Disney+ Investor showcase is going on right now. They just announced Raya and the Last Dragon will go in theaters and Disney+ Premiere Access simultaneously. Wonder if they'll bring the price down... more announcements will come. Excited to see what happens to Black Widow, I'm gonna guess the same.

its amusing that no one is gonna be that pissed at Disney for this announcement when it isn't that different than what Warner did.

Disney already has put Hamilton, Mulan, and now Raya on D+, all films that had 500m+ WW potential. Sure, they added a "premiere" access but the only reason why they can do that is cause they have almost 90m subs while HBOMAX has 8m subs.

People need to stop thinking the HBOMAX decision was just Warner being crazy. They are crazy, but the entire industry is at their same level. All the other studios and platforms are already doing it or will do it soon.

The MCU is the only property Disney will probably not commit to an immediate D+ release.

They haven't done the MCU panel but no real bombshells from the presentation. Jungle Cruise, Cruella still look to be theatrical releases and Pixar is releasing a film in June 2021.

No reason theaters shouldn’t be allowed full capacity by May. Whether people will come is the question.

They held strong on Black Widow. Good for them. I’m pretty pumped for Raya in March now.

Why is this happening on Game Awards night?

Hocus Pocus 2 and Sister Act 3 is nice though.

Yeah its the same announcement as WB but they are doing it in phases still. WB also mentioned that if state of things improve they will change their strategy. I feel its the same thing both of them did but in a different way.

Agreed. Depending on how things go with the vaccinations, I could very well imagine a scenario where WB reverses course starting with their Christmas 2021 and beyond releases.

I'm hoping it happens towards end of summer 2021.

I think people underestimate how quickly vaccines will lead to the collapse of the pandemic. Per CDC numbers as of December 9, 92% of those who died were over 55 and 97% over 45. Once those over 55 are vaccinated, it's basically over.

Looks like Disney is sticking with Raya's release date. By that time we'll probably know what happens with Black Widow.

Why would they need to move Raya? They’re already doing a simultaneous release.

My guess is they’ll do simultaneous release for Black Widow as well.

So Cruella actually looks pretty darn good. The trailer did reek of copying Joker though lol

A serious movie about a crazy person is automatically Joker?

I didn't love Cruella's trailer looks like a low-tier Disney live action reimagination with tons of money behind it.

Disney openly supporting short theatrical runs is yet another nail in the coffin of seeing blockbuster boxoffice runs coming back (in the US at least). If everyone knows Frozen 3 will be on Disney+ in two months, some families will wait.

This was expected in the long run and as someone already mentioned COVID is just speeding up the process.

I began participating in online boxoffice forums back in the 1990s. Then, a $30M OW was considered very good. I’ve now come ‘full circle’ :)

In France we have a, no joke, 36 months window between a release in theaters and a release on streaming services like Netflix or Disney+, so it makes me laugh when some Disney CEO says 90 days is too long. :funny:

Interesting. So a movie like Endgame is still not on home video in France?

Home video is 4 months, so it is available to buy on DVD or Blu-ray. But in terms of streaming even Infinity War is not available on Disney+ yet, and Endgame won't be available until next year.

That’s good for dvd and blu-ray makers then.
