Alright, alright it is time to crank up the volume and start the 2020 WOKJ Mega-Popstar Tournament of Champions!!!

I've outlined how it will work, but let's take one more refresher. This will be a group stage round-robyn style of tournament, with each singer competing against each of the other three in their group once. A win gets you two points, a loss gets you zero, a tie results in one for both sides. Whoever has the most points advances into the final group of eight. Tiebreakers will be decided by the head to head matches. If that was a tie too we will figure something else out, hopefully it never comes up. There will be four matches a day and voting will last for four days, though there will be a fresh four every day until we crown a winner, keeping it fast and furious.

This is gonna be known as the heartbreaker group for me. Not only is it Mariah's best song, but it will be my state of self after she advances. Carly has a lot of love on here but I just can't see her making it through this gauntlet.

Usher has plenty of greats jams and I only like maybe one Bieber song, so the second match was easy.

#3: Jennifer Lopez

Katy and Yonce are close with their overall discographies, but the Teenage Dream song and album top anything the former leader of Destiny's Child has done.

Same with Janet and Lopez, but Jlo just has the more memorable hits for me. I'm Real > all else in either catalog.

I grew up in the 80's-90's, so Rhythm Nation, Black Cat, Escapade, That's The Way Love Goes, and If all come to mind immediately. I can't name a JLo song off the top of my head. She was great in Selena though.

If this is a contest for biggest pop stars, why no Elvis, Billy Joel, Elton John, or Celine Dion?

You could even make a case for George Michael, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Olivia Newton-John, and Cher.

Some of the people in the contest have nothing on some of the above artists.

I mostly kept it to recent people, with MJ and Prince being the only ones who started in the late 70s. So no Elvis, McCartney, Elton, Aretha, Sinatra, etc...

Is Billy Joel really pop? Hard to say. We had plenty of these debates in the brainstorming.

Billy Joel is pop but he starts early enough to leave him off for that

Nasty Girl is a fun Janet song, but overall I'm not too big on her either. Really wish her and MJ's big song together was better than Scream.
