Unfortunately it seems to me like the main California, Texas, Florida waves may have just been delayed compared to other states. With the size of the US it's like 50 different countries getting it at different times. They will never be NY since they're not going to do the nursing home atrocity, but it could be enough to force a lockdown for months at least in those places.

Looks like this thing will be uncontrollable in US as well as India.

Mexico is about to pass Italy and land as fourth with most deaths lmao. And this won't stop anytime soon.

Looks like we may pass the UK too in about two weeks time.

Arizona is the current epicenter of the outbreak in the US in terms of case and death numbers per capita. But Florida is about to take over.

If we had implemented rigorous testing and tracing and quarantine during the lockdown in March/April to try to suppress the virus, we could have prevented the subsequent flare-ups.

CDC finally admits this is airborne. Up to 16 hours in the air.

RIP movie theaters.

China has not opened their theaters since they closed in Feb. and there are almost no active cases anymore, something tells me they've known about airborne transmission since a long time.

Trump has ordered hospitals to send their Covid data directly to him instead of the CDC. So the numbers should start going down by a lot. Yay for dictatorships! If we can’t see it then it’s not there.

:disgust:

Hopefully states and hospitals will still report independently.

Looks like these three states and Arizona are doing better than a few weeks ago. I think they passed their peak. There should be no reason why the US numbers shouldn’t be really good by the time of Tenet’s current release date.

Just announced Universal has made an agreement with AMC, 17-day theatrical window... yeesh.

We're in for a bumpy ride when it comes to box office.

I’m curious what this means:

"AMC will also share in these new revenue streams that will come to the movie ecosystem from premium video on demand,"

Are they only getting revenue from movies watched on “AMC theater on demand“ streaming, and this will become their new focal point? Or is universal actually sharing revenue with AMC if someone rents from amazon, roku, apple, etc.

Premium on-demand, which denotes that initial phase where rentals are $20/$30. AMC does not share in the long tail ancillary revenue (i.e. Prime rental revenue, Redbox, or any steaming deal).

Re-release of Interstellar in China kicked off Sunday with $2.4M and 27% coming from the 461 IMAX scrns. Social distancing is at 30% capacity protocols. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG rolled out in China with just $1.2M

I don’t see how studios don’t send some 2020/2021 tentpoles to VOD? It will be months before a vaccine is fully disseminated which means late 2021 at the earliest for a return to normalcy. Many of the films pushed from spring/summer 2020 would have to be pushed again or face an anemic boxoffice landscape (due to shrunken theater capacity).

So Mexico opened theaters in some states today... at 30% capacity and without the three biggest cities in the country, lmao. this will flop.

My previous post was before the news that Disney would release Mulan on Disney+

Expect more studios to announce PVOD plans.

The thing is WB already tested it with SCOOB and other movies. Universal, Paramount have also tested it with their movies. I don't remember any memorable ones from LG but their slate have been dire this year anyways though I feel their movies would do the best on VOD.

Studios are still expecting returns like they used to get from theaters which is impossible in this economy. I think we might see some movies here and there but only after the theatrical release for Tenet fails will studios realize that they'll have to do with less.

Agreed. If Tenet fails and Mulan succeeds via Disney+ (assuming they’ll publish the financials), it will be a no brainer for many films. The James Bonds of the world will probably remain committed to a traditional release and just delay but I can see Soul (Pixar) going to Disney+ for example.

AMC is offering tickets for 15 cents on the grand reopening day. At first I was annoyed since this will increase traffic and likely spread covid. Then I thought ... at 15 cents I could easily buy out an entire limited capacity theater for myself. I probably won’t do it, but that’d be a good way to get around the whole pandemic thing right? :hahaha:

15 cents lol. What kind of strategy is this? They are so desperate to open their halls that they don't care about earning money?

The strategy is to let people know that theaters are open again... They did similar things in other countries and it worked...
