Post Knives Out - What Went Right?
Despite releasing on Thanksgiving, it will finish at around $150-$160 or even more despite it opened at $26.7m in its 3-day portion. Live-action films rarely have fantastic legs post-Thanksgiving. I feel this deserves its own thread!!!

It was both original and great - there's always an audience for those films

Goodwill for Rian Johnson and his wonderful Last Jedi. Plus it was great and appealed to a wide audience. Also, films that have something to say typically do well.

(Though, honestly, I do believe a lot of people wanted to support Rian)

Pretty much this, and it helps that their weren't a whole lot of other appealing options for adults to see over the holidays considering most of them flopped.

Too bad he RUINED who-dunnit-murder-mysteries. Knives Out 2 will have to reveal that Tim Curry's character from Clue was actually behind everything all along.

Great and different product with decent marketing and it delivered not only with critics but with audience alike. The targeted adult oriented audience definitely helped its legs.

The audience felt like they are on a journey with Marta which I think is the key to its success as well.

It does whatever the opposite of "falling between two stools" is. The right mix of old-fashioned and topical. The cast is star-studded but not in a way that makes you think "that's it" It's smart, but in a way that makes people who buy puzzle books at the airport feel smart, like Inception. It's the perfect consensus pick, but has just enough oomph to not be a compromise candidate.
