Pretty weak group, what stands out?

I'm gonna say Abominable or Downton. I think Ad Astra will be a turkey. (edit: it's not)

I can see Ad Astra matching Passengers.

I can't see it being good after all its release date changes before settling in September, plus James Gray is not an especially mainstream director, so it is a candidate for misleading trailer and a film more interested in being Solaris than Gravity, and people being pissed

Edit - Oh, it actually has reviews and it is good. I still expect it to tune out mainstream audiences though. There is indeed a Solaris comp in one of the reviews

Brad Pitt in space seems like a winner. I’d be surprised by less than $90M and am expecting around $110M.

Dreamworks has been better lately, but we just had two animated movies about yetis not too long ago neither did very well.

Would be interesting if it was Hustlers. Haven't had a movie open aimed specifically for women in awhile.

I would be thrilled if it was! I hope Hustler's does very well.

Sure? That was back in May. Was there another film aimed specifically at women this summer?

Hustlers should do at least 20m more than The Hustle.

Hustlers is tracking for a mid-20s OW so it should be good for $70m+

I also think Ad Astra will go over $70m so its a tight race between the two.

Not really feeling Ad Astra. Feel like it'll only do slightly better than First Man unless it's like really amazing.

Abominable or Hustlers. I have it being Abominable though. Would love for it to be Hustlers. STX certainly needs a hit.

Really? Are we sure they aren't just adding together the combined opening weekends of Hustlers (May 2019), The Kitchen and Widows?

Also it sounds like reviews might end up being terrific for Hustlers so that could only help it soar higher.

Don’t think it’s a female targeted flick really. I can’t wait for it! One more week

? Idk this doesn't seem like a Magic Mike situation for men, looks like a perfect girls night out movie. Guess we will see how demographic is after release.

I hear that but I think anyone can equally want to see a movie, same with a simple favor, sex and the city and the like. Idk why people think men won’t be interested in some movies just because it stars women but that’s just me I guess

It's far easier to get a male targeted film to attract the female audience than it is for a female targeted film to attract a male audience. Men are stubborn as shit. It's insane that the studios cater to them so frequently.

It's definitely starting to look like Hustlers is going to break out quite a bit. Perfect timing and an appealing marketing campaign is seriously going to push it. I am hoping that Rambo and Ad Astra overperform somewhat as well.

Post subject:  Re: Second highest grossing September film?

I think we'll end up with the following:

Hustlers - $90-$110m
Ad Astra - $65-$85m
Abominable - $70-$80m
Downton Abbey - $50-$60m
Rambo: Last Blood - $40-$50m
The Goldfinch - $20-$30m

I doubt anything else beats Hustlers at this point.

Hustlers was 67% female.

Yep it's looking like it's going to be Hustlers unless something else breaks out.

Abominable is a challenger IMO. TLK has been doing great because of the lack of competition.

Not that huge at all. It’s ridiculous that this whole “chick flick” mentality still exists today and it’s beyond laughable that people thought Crazy Rich Asians was a chick flick on Reddit. And it’s only like, 3 theaters
