Halle Bailey (only major role has been on Grownish) has been casted as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula.

I think this will do Beauty and the Beast numbers. The Little Mermaid is one of the most iconic Disney movies.

I wish the actress who they picked closer resembled Ariel, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. McCarthy would be a horrible choice for Ursula.

I could see it going as low as $150M domestic and $130M international or as high as $250M domestic and $200M international. I don't think it gets much beyond that range.

I would love it if audiences around the world picked the movie they wanted to see based on quality and weren't prejudiced, but I think this will flop in Asia and Latin America for the same reason a gay Spider-Man who makes out with a guy in the trailer would also bomb.

That's the path Disney are pushing and they'll see diminishing returns in the long run as a result. It's an emerging trend in all their movies now.

And to be honest I have no issue with this actress being cast and have no interest in this movie but I know others do.

The 1989 film kick started the Disney 90's renaissance so it is held up in high regard. McCarthy would be great as Ursula so I doubt it will go much lower than $300m.

Will be interesting how Mulan fairs next year. Mulan has the better OS prospects but wont be as strong domestically.

Ehh... ethnic groups are fluid. You can belong to one as long as you identify with such group and/or are generally accepted as a member of such group. If a white kid lived in China most of her life, I would consider her Chinese and Asian.

When it comes to this film I do think a lot of people around the world have a very defined image of Ariel and it will be very hard for them to accept this casting.
