https://www.boxofficemojo.com/schedule/ ... 020&p=.htm

Sub-par lineup throughout next year, even accounting for a few dark horses.

Looks like it could be the first sub-$11B (dom) year since 2014
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/

Now, more than ever, theatrical releases are just another avenue of entertainment instead of THE destination for feature films. Just like people are perfectly fine looking at small screens, they are also ok with small-to-medium level productions (i.e. what you typically get on Netflix, HBO, Prime, etc), creating an even more fragmented market for eyeballs.

Well it would just be a normal year if Disney hadn’t overloaded this year. Spider-Man and Aladdin would be top 5 films.

Tenet is gonna kill it though. $300M with a small chance of winning the worldwide crown from Mulan and Wonder Woman.

OS and WW to me Fast 9 is the big favorite. China could still grow even if other markets drop.

I am very optimistic about Tenet as well. Its 1st thriller from Nolan since Inception. Last 2 movies were more of a drama. if the rumors about sci-fi and time travel are true, potential could be huge.

Who do you think will be the top 5 OS/WW for 2020?

Eh, maybe on Fast but I think Diesel and The Rock breaking up will hurt it. They’re down to four of the OGs now and one of them has already been killed and brought back to life.

Well, what are the biggies or at least films of note:

Pre-Summer

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Onward
Mulan (2020)
James Bond 25

Summer

Black Widow
Fast & Furious 9
Minions: The Rise of Gru
Wonder Woman 1984
Soul
Top Gun
Tenet
Morbious
Jungle Cruise

Fall/Holiday

The Many Saints of Newark
Bios
The Eternals
Dune
Westside Story
Cruela

Not looking great. Seems like the usual DC vs Marvel vs Pixar but on a lower level than previous years.

Bond and FF9 for OS/WW.

Yeah from those it doesn't really seem like there's a for sure billion dollar picture except maybe F&F9, but who knows.

Mulan, WW1984, F&F9 and the MCU films will probably be the biggest of the year.

A flop year tbh.

On the plus side, Dune has a lot of room to break out! There's no Star Wars or whatever to cut its legs in half and steal its hype.

Minions 2 and Bond 25 also have OS and perhaps WW chances to be big/sizable. Maybe top 5 OS/WW I'd say.

I have not done deep analysis enough to answer that. But big OS movies would be

Fast 9
Bond
Minions 2
Mulan (if China breaks out huge)
Tenet

World Wide (This is tougher to predict so early)

Fast 9
Bond
Wonder Woman 2
Tenet
Minions 2
Soul

Not really sure why everyone is predicting Tenet to be so huge. I'm a fan of Nolan but idk, I guess until I see a trailer I feel like it'll do Interstellar #s WW.

Interstellar was a space drama. This one is supposed to be Inception on steroids. With my fanboy hat on I am seeing Yuge gross.

One of my frustrations with the business world is this expectation of ever increasing profits and revenues. Same with Hollywood. It’s ok if every year is not a record year.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I think Gotham City Sirens makes at least 1.5x what Birds of Prey: The Fantabolous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn makes. The title is fugly and tryhard. Even Harley would be 99% better.

I think the title is fun. And it'll be a hit regardless, I believe it costs $70m or less.

Sirens hasn't been announced yet. Ayer was originally attsched to make it but that never happened. I hope they do end up making it though, I feel like this is the direction they went initially as Margot probably didn't want to be overshadowed by Ivy or Catwoman.

There will be hits but THE BATMAN will take up the mantle as the next film everybody can't wait for once Star Wars shows

They are, I’m saying the change of titles is so bad it will cost it a good chunk of money. :hahaha:

I can only speak from personal experience, but the flamboyant name for the movie makes me at least 2x more likely / excited to see it.

Discounting transitional words like the, a, of, etc.... the longest title to ever gross over $200M is Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with six, nobody else has gone past five. The Fantabolous Emancipation has Seven. But when it disappoints I’m sure people won’t blame WB for making yet another unforced error with one of their major franchise pictures.

Titles matter! :P

People are going to buy tickets for "Bird of Prey"

It's no different than say "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King". You have to have trigger words for people to ask for. So people are gonna say "2 for Bird of Prey" or "8 for Harley Quinn"

3 for Harley Quinn's Birds of Prey please.

I didn't know they were saving Gotham City Sirens for a later movie. I still think they could do a lot better.

Yes, two of the LOTR movies had 4 thes in the title, and they were still less cumbersome than this monstrosity.
