Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
For the next six weeks, will Sunday drops be bigger than usual due to the final season of GAME OF THRONES?

It's on so late at night, so I would imagine it would have very little effect. Though if it does, it will be on the very adult oriented films.

Aren't there a lot of viewing parties going on?

Yeah, I’d say it probably affects some movies. Depending on where you live, it starts at different times, but you’d likely not be able to go to any evening shows. However, those are the times when adults are typically not going to the movies on a Sunday night anyway. Effect will be pretty small.

If you look at the dailies during last season, didn't see any real impact but that debuted in July. Might be able to see extra drop since most will stay home to watch GOT and are probably waiting for Avengers too.

Nah, they've never even done over 20 million live (They have a almost a 50/50 split now towards people that save and watch it later) Plus most theaters don't even have showtimes after 7 on Sundays, no one goes to them.
60 minutes had like 25 million viewers this time last year and that didn't effect Pacific Rim 2.

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
Loll what, I was referring to stormy Daniels which was the last weekend in March and had over 22 million viewers live, which GOT has never had.
Also do showings exist past 7? of course, it’s not like it’s going to affect anyone though. As said avengers is going to already be seen by anyone who wants to see it that weekend. You guys seriously try to play dumb on every single post. It is such a small amount of a single demographic. It won’t effect kids, fans dying to see a movie or even adults (they are not that into GOT, and if they are they will record it)
I don’t understand the PR2 as bad, Shazam is predicted to drop 30% this weekend

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
It might affect Sunday this week, considering that a lot of people will want to have watched the last episode (or more) again to freshen up on where things left off - esp. since they were airing on HBO. People wanting to watch the last season premiere wouldn't go to any movies within a few hours of show time to be sure to be home and ready for Thrones. So you'll probably notice an effect on some films.
What is the late Sunday theatrical demo anyway? I'm never at the theater at that time.

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
There didn't seem to be much an effect in 2017 [Apes dropped i. The 20's on its OW] but this is the last season and 2017 premiere was in summer.

Don't people prefer to binge-watch nowadays? Which means they can save them up, or is that not possible with the network they are on?

I think people still like watching new episodes of a show as soon as they can. It's just Netflix releases an entire new season at once for their shows so they can do that and binge at the same time, but for shows like HBO's watching them live is still popular. GOT is also a special case in terms of being one of the most water cooler dramas ever

If only they had a 2.5 hour theatrical release of the the finale of the show, it probably would have broken the R rated opening week numbers. Its amazing how big the show has become now from 8 years ago

They could have made some good money releasing the finale in theaters.

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
New Shazam estimate has Sunday drop at 35%. Dropped 30% last week so nothing that noticable.
I think what'll be more interesting is seeing the effect of the series finale when John Wick opens.

17.4 million. Series high, that’s about it.

It’s on at 6pm PST. So yes, absolutely will have an effect. Good thread topic. I hadn’t considered the GOT effect.

The finale certainly will. Its Sunday so the impact is never huge but there will be one.

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
Last season for the finale [8/27] the box office was low the Sunday drops were normal. Since this is in May I expect to see some type of effect.

Right but only 11 was from 9PM, point being it's not really affecting anything. The finale will go higher and I'm not really sure if John Wick 3 will be that big of an indicator. That is probably the one film that intersects with the demographic though. The following weekend will probably be the test, if it has a ridiculous hold then you'll be able to see an effect. I was just looking online and I was looking at May 14th, 1998. Which was the airing of the Seinfeld finale (76.8 million) and Frank Sinatra's funeral was also watched by over 40 million people simultaneously. Deep Impact and Titanic definitely saw major drops. It looks like every film that has dailies from that Thursday dropped at least 25% when most films usually saw 20% increases. I think Sunday night in general has shifted more to a TV night so it's really hard to compare a show that might hit 30 million for the finale (But again, now that shows have back to back to back encore presentations which Nielson lumps in almost like previews for movies, and you can watch it at your leisure, it really makes the effect pretty very slight)

Re: Will there be a GOT Sunday effect on box office?
If there isn't an effect with domestic box office there surely will be one with international box office. GoT is the most watched show worldwide by quite a large margin I believe.
