Re: May 10-12 predictions
Pikachu has had terrific marketing and has surely riled up the millions of Pokemon fans.
I feel like it needed another week of buzz and better reviews to reach its potential though. True Pokemasters won’t care, but the GA will roll their eyes and say “here we go again with the video games.”

Re: May 10-12 predictions
Detective Pikachu - 90 (hoping for more but idk, not feeling huge hype) The Hustle - 10 (this should be doing more but marketing seems muted) Poms - 12 (will get the Book Club audience) Tolkein - 4
If Avengers does around 145m this weekend and Pikachu does 90m would need a sub-40% drop to stay #1. Not likely unless Pikachu goes below 80.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
I think this will do 80m. Venom comes to mind. It had huge buzz when the trailers came out but felt more muted and like it was being overshadowed by A Star is Born by the time it came out. But it still did huge numbers anyway.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
The Hustle should have way more buzz. It's funny that all these female movies got green-lit in the last few years but the attendance has not matched the outcry for more female lead roles. This will probably be another casualty.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
Yeah something like The Hustle should be an easy $20m+ opener (even in this day and age where comedies and mid size films struggle). It will struggle to get low double digits.

I disagree. It's too much to expect a comedy distributed by a non-major studio to open to $20m+ when studio comedies such as Game Night, Blockers, and What Men Want missed/barely managed $20m OW.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
Dude, it stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson for fuck's sake. It's not a little indie comedy from A24 with teenage nobodies. It's a broad high-profile comedy with a great release date.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
No shit. But it's still in 2,700 cinemas, and that's what we're kinda saying anyway....that this type of film should be making $20m opening but because of factors such as the distro it's not even challenging for that.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
Pikachu will draw fans, and there's a lot of them. My concern is the pervasive silence among casual moviegoers. No video game adaptation has cracked $50m and I'm not sensing this will, either.

Re: May 10-12 predictions
I’m baffled as to why Nintendo hasn’t announced anything about the new Switch games this week. It’s a perfect opportunity for cross promotion.
At least Pokemon Go is doing a Detective Pikachu special event.
