January 2020 Predictions
Will Grudge break out like so many horror movies that have come before it on this weekend? I think it's good for at least $20M and wouldn't be too surprised by $25M.
1917 - $33M / $120M Bad Boys 3 Life - $35M (4-day) / $80M Dolittle - $25M (4-day) / $80M - should be a leggy hit if decent Grudge - $22M / $53M Like A Boss - $15M / $45M
I don't think anything else will cross $40M, though I will be rooting for The Gentlemen.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
Eh Dolittle and Bad Boys don't seem that unrealistic, and 1917 should breakout with all the Oscar buzz it's getting, but I don't see how The Grudge doesn't end up being another failed horror reboot like Rings, although that one could still be pretty profitable depending on the budget, and I think Just Mercy and Like a Boss definitely have some breakout potential.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
I mean we just saw Insidious 4 open to almost $30M on this very weekend and it's not like anyone was begging for that one. Grudge trailer seemed to get a decent response. If it was on any other weekend (without the benefit of Halloween or Friday the 13th) I would probably peg it at $15M.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
I still haven't seen a trailer for Grudge. This is usually a good weekend for horror so I would guess teens opening.
Pairing of Doolittle and Bad Boys seems like a strong weekend but idk if either will do much more than 30m for the 4-day.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
Yeah Flava's numbers sound about right. Hard to say where 1917 will finish - could be anywhere between $70m to $140m but $120m is very possible.

I think 1917 should've released wide the same weekend as Star Wars.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
Where are these huge 1917 predictions coming from? No stars, Sam Mendes is not Chris Nolan, WW1 movies don't do very well... I would love to see it make $120M but I was thinking $60-$80M range was more realistic.

Huge PTA, Oscar buzz, Dunkirk 2 effect, very cinematic trailers, military movies have a good track record in January, etc... I’m probably overpredicting but I think it will be a very buzzworthy movie. Also, a movie set during WW1 has outgrossed all of the movies set during WW2.

This reminds me of Rings. Younger horror audiences probably haven't seen the others which could actually be a good thing if they don't even know of them and think this is something original. It would be better than them just not having seen them and thinking they'd have to watch them in order to see this. Then people who actually were around for the original series likely don't care because it was terrible. Hence the huge drop in box office from the first to the second. Don't get me wrong, despite hating the first two I do hope this does solid since it's an R-rated horror movie. I also think it looks surprisingly decent and will mostly likely catch it while in theaters. But it doesn't seem like there's much interest.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
Yeah the movie will be lucky to hit $10M OW IMO. I actually think it looks pretty decent as well and I'm not even a big fan of the 2004 remake, but between the mediocre marketing and the lack of reviews/buzz I don't see how it breaks out. I'll likely end up checking it out sometime though.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
The Gentlemen probably won’t make $25m total but it deserves much more. It’s a shit load of fun!

Re: January 2020 Predictions
I've certainly changed my mind about watching The Grudge in theaters. Here's hoping Underwater turns out better.

Re: January 2020 Predictions
I'm actually somewhat interested in Underwater myself, but that movie is definitely going to bomb big time. It has even less going for it than The Grudge did.
