I mean, $10.5 mil for a horror film is pretty fantastic.

Dang, WWW. I thought the trailers were good. I didn't think folks disliked the first one. I think in one showing I watched of the first there were some groans at the end but I can't remember why. The first did 327 so what's up.

NFL probably deflated the number too. I was expecting only $10M so its not too bad. $100M still on table.

A drop isn't surprising. The first film just had next level buzz from its marketing, and the kids side of It is overall the more iconic one

Sub-240m total would be disappointing. Hope it still does 100m for the weekend.

Magnus said it all.

Besides, I don't know why people expected this to match the first, which came out as a novelty after one of the worst summers ever.
And this is not worth a WWW thread, unless it somehow goes sub-200M total. It 's looking pretty strong OS, where it has a solid chance of repeating the first chapter's numbers - if it makes 225M domestically instead of 275, it's no big deal.

Just under three hours is a tall order for something that isn't a LOTR-type flick or a comic book movie. Even for comic books, you better be Avengers to clock in at that long.

slightly less opening with worse legs but still a crazy good total. I see 120m/270m.

Think its too early to sign 'It 2' off from a $100m OW. The bigger run-time might be a factor for lower preview numbers along with the over-performance of first and it didn't generate enough must-see buzz like the original.

After the massive non-Disney franchise drops off a cliff we've seen all summer, this is pretty god damn good.

Well if that holds then $100m should happen and its Friday number was lower but definitely great for a horror movie.

Easiest prediction of all time. What's with all the negativity? It was never going to have a Saw/Conjuring/PA type sequel run. It reached it's peak in the first, which was always the strongest part. Honestly 25% drop off is quite good, and this went within that. Total might still be in the 33-40% range, but God.

People here really have blinders on these days.

The Fate of the Furious is the only movie to miss $100M with a $40M+ opening day, and it was at $45M. However, there’s only been one horror movie to have that kind of opening and It 1 was a cultural phenom at the time. Halloween is probably a better comparison for how the weekend will play out.

I just noticed It 2 is the 5th highest widest opening ever. Jesus.

Projection adjusted down to 26 neat Friday. Looks like the evenings were dreadful.

Not good at all.

Now that honestly does get to be slightly disappointing. If true, 200m is pretty much impossible. Anyway 250m would have been great, and I don't think you can seriously suggest disappointment for anything over 175m.

Keep in mind if it does 150m it's still the biggest horror sequel...Ever? At least in my memory. Well, Halloween earned slightly more last year.

Wow down $6M from the late-night estimate - how the fuck did that happen? You'd figure the Friday night walkup crowd would be huge.

With a $37M opening day it will be lucky to hit $90M on the weekend and $200M total. I'll predict $85M/$190M. Stunning really.

I figured that being a major franchise that will definitively end on part 2 would be a huge hook to bring back everyone that saw the first movie. And the high quality trailer seemed to point us in this direction as well. But the warning signs were there over the last few weeks. And by the time It opened, people are mostly just talking about the NFL and the other killer clown movie. Reminds me of Detective Pikachu's underperformance in that way.

We might be in for a rough fall. If It is this vulnerable, then the #NotJoker / #NotFrozen / #NotStarWars effect could fell everything else in its path.

I called it all the way back when they were cast, but Chastain and McAvoy were a huge waste of money too. You didn't need Stars for this movie and they obviously added nothing to the box office.

Though they will (probably) increase my own enjoyment of the film. If only that were the only metric that mattered!

Yeah it looks like it was really pre-sales heavy just like TLK back in July, although the fact that night business was that weak for this is quite surprising considering most horror films play a lot better in that time frame.

The preview ratio was so high and the estimate dropped because it’s obviously frontloaded as hell.

I think what happened here is that the first IT was a perfect storm of it being nostalgic yet still seeming fresh, and the kids aspect is by far the most iconic. The marketing for this was solid but it made it seem like more of the same, and there wasn't a memeable moment in the trailer like Pennywise in the sewers with the paper boat.
