Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
Really guys? $100+M OW. This has the look of the Joaquin Phoenix movie, Her. I don't see it drawing audiences at that scale.

Trailer has 40m+ views on YT. Ya, it'll gross sub-20m total.

Yeah the buzz for this is there for a HUGE opening. I'm just hoping that it's good.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
This will have a big opening based simply on the fact that it's about The Joker. Though I could see WOM being mixed as it will probably be a different type of film to what the general audience is expecting. Legs could be quite poor in that case (I.e Watchmen).

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
Agreed. I could see an $80m opening but only a $175m total, unless they are hiding some elements that will make it much more fan-friendly (such as Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, etc.).

Idk, I don’t see a studio giving the green light to a tent pole that doesn’t aim to reach the mainstream.

This is a tentpole? Budget is $55m.

Yeah, we're going to have to seriously reconsider predictions. That budget confirms it will be small in scale, and thus won't attract the blockbuster crowds.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
Well Deadpool was only 58. If the action is more grounded it’s certainly doable and the opening shouldn’t be an issue. Legs are probably going to be rough though, don’t like the release date

Script leaked, its quite good, a bit cliche at times but overall very good and timely feel to it, no doubt this will be very popular with the Nolanized millennial urban crowd

A year ago pretty much nobody wanted to see Joker. Then the trailer came, and suddenly everyone wanted to see it. It will be an event, because it has brilliant marketing that makes it a must-see film.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
The pattern is now that the event films get bigger and bigger (at least on OW) so $80-$120m OW is in range. It's just the legs that could be iffy - not because the film is bad but because it may not be what the general audience expects.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
So this is not only screening at the Venice Film Festival (a move WB also did with Gravity, Black Mass, and A Star is Born), it's going to be in competition, something none of those movies did. It's also screening at the Toronto Film Festival, so WB seems to be going all-in on assuming this can be an Oscar player. Maybe it ends up being a miscalculation like Black Mass, but if they do pull it off hype is gonna be through the damn roof.

Well word is from pre-screenings is it might be Phoenix at his absolute best.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
This is going to be a major critical delight but possibly a disappointment to the general audience expecting more of a run of the mill comic book origin story.
I love what WB is doing with this film.

MadGez wrote: This is going to be a major critical delight but possibly a disappointment to the general audience expecting more of a run of the mill comic book origin story. I dunno, I think the marketing is doing a solid job of selling this as not your typical comic book superhero flick - the greatest hint of action in the trailer is Phoenix constantly getting beat up, heh. Plus it'll have an R rating, and Phoenix is enough of an oddball at this point that I think his presence will give everyone a better idea that this will be an odd movie (this will actually be his first super-wide release since We Own the Night in 2007?!). So its opening might not be on Venom levels, but bare minimum I think it'll make back its budget in its first three days.

Goodness, I didn't realize he has not been in a film over 3,000 theaters since 2005! Only once over 3,500 theaters.

I think Logan numbers are goal, I see something like 75/190

Joaquin has been in Gladiator, Signs, The Village, Walk the Line, The Master, Her, Inherent Vice, and now Joker. A filmography.

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
I still don't get where all the enthusiasm is coming from...
I watch almost every comicbook movie but I have no desire at all to see JOKER...
People want to see strong villains but he just looks like mama's cry-baby...
I wouldn't be surprised at all if this opens around the $30m mark...

Re: Joker - October 4, 2019
There’s plenty of online hype, I’m worried though, I almost want them to change the title. It’s almost like having a Superman movie, calling it Superman and all you get is a character study on Clark Kent
