Quote:
The first set of estimates are in, and they’re showing that Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther is headed toward a historic weekend with $200M-$205M over four-days, $175M over three. These figures do not come from Disney. The Ryan Coolger-directed, an co-written pic with Joe Robert Cole should post an estimated $72M today, with last night’s $25.2M previews repping 35% of that number.

Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed is estimated to take $5.5M today, -70% with a 4-day between $15M-$20M in second place. On the high end, this sends the threequel’s cume to $79M-plus.

Lionsgate/StudioCanal/Aardman’s family title Early Man is eyeing $1.1M today, $6.1M over four-days in its opening.

PureFlix’s sword and sandal movie Samson is looking at $750K for Friday, $2.6M over the four-day holiday.

I do not believe Fifty Shades will end up in second this weekend. I think it will be Peter Rabbit but there's no estimate for that yet.

Very curious how Showman holds up. I think it will see a really great hold even with Black Panther. Will probably be the least hurt by Panther.

That would be a great hold for 50 shades in the face of Black Panther. People must still be catching it for Valentine’s Day.

Men can go to Black Panther and women can go to Fifty Shades. Not that women aren't interested in Black Panther but it does have more male appeal, IMO.

The next wave of superhero are clearly hitting their stride now. Wonder Woman, Thor, and now obviously BP will easily outgross Spider-man, Iron Man, Justice League, etc.

Would be terrible for Samson, placing it as possibly the lowest wide opener in President's Weekend history.

This will pass up Insidious 4 as the highest grossing movie of 2018 in one day. Nice.

Looking at the massive number Black Panther is pulling, Sony would be stupid not to use it to remind people of their own Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse coming in December.

If $72m is close to accurate, I’d say the mark to beat is Iron Man 3’s $174m. That would make Black Panther the biggest solo hero opener.

$68m would be pretty weak considering the previews. Still an amazing number obviously and Iron Man 3 is still in play thanks to an inflated Sunday.

I wonder what movie will take #1 from Black Panther? The first movie with a chance is A Wrinkle In Time. That should be able to but it's possible it won't.

Black Panther is now, I believe, only the second superhero movie to ever get an A+ from Cinemascore, after The Avengers. Well, third if you count Incredibles. So that's probably a good sign for legs?
