MAGNUS UPDATE: The official estimate from BOM is 45m.

THE DARK SHAPE UPDATE: Stop putting numbers in thread titles, Magnus. ;)

"‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Thursday Night Previews Hit $45M"

Holy shit. I was expecting mid-to-upper-30s.

Pretty expected. Less than Force Awakens but quite a bit more than Rogue One.

TFA's true Friday was $62 million. I don't expect TLJ's to be that far off. If it makes $45m in previews, I think it hits $100m for the day.

$45M would be really solid IMO. It should definitely hit $100M OD with that number, but it's hard to say exactly how frontloaded it will be considering the lesser hype than TFA.

TFA opening weekend sans previews is the same as JURASSIC WORLD gross wise and a few other films admissions wise.

The hype is certainly matchable.

I sort of have a hard time believing a film will do only 50 million in day business when it has mostly full shows running all day from the morning at local theatres.

It's a very good number and bang on with expectations.Target has always been about beating JW's OW. Even if it falls short it's more impressive considering the December bow.

Can we still use that considering TFA opened to $250m in December?

This is also 3 days earlier than TFA, which really does make a difference this time of year, as much different numbers of schools (especially college and high schools) are in session from day to day. Some college students are still taking finals today, for example.

It’s getting bad audience scores on rotten tomatoes so I fear it’s not going to beat JW or Avengers OW :(

Geeks are flooding the app. Same thing happens to every CALL OF DUTY game.

geeks aside, of the handful of friends I know who saw it and some of the online reaction I've seen, there does seem to be a similar feeling of "very strong highs but not so good lows". WOM will be POSITIVE but is it going to be better than TFA? Probably not. Will it actually matter that much? Probably not.

I think the film is gonna get good enough WOM to convince anyone who was on the fence to go see it. Those who were farther from fence likely wouldn't come even with stellar WOM.

Yeah, this is my sense. I haven't really seen any negative stuff on Facebook, just pretty positive/super-positive stuff. The poor online scores, as I said in the criticism thread, just seems like buthurt fans acting out.

The backlash to this film is interesting. I'm sure the majority of it is coming from hardcore fanboys who aren't pleased with some of the choices they made, but it sounds like general audiences probably won't care as much. Still though I have to wonder just how much this will affect repeat viewings, because I doubt it will have that same effect as TFA.

Of course, the holidays are going to help it out a ton.

Sure, but was it ever going to reach that level? This is the second film in a trilogy following one of the biggest hits of all time. It was always going to drop.

I think the percentage of fans angry at the movie, honestly, is similar to that of fans being angry at Iron Man 3 for their handling of the Ben Kingsley guy - they are being obnoxiously vocal online, but mainstream auds don't really give a fuck.I do think repeat viewings will be lower than TFA, but this movie is just inherently less of an event than that movie, as has been discussed before (I mean, it is the third Star Wars movie in 24 months).

I want to see it in Dolby digital. WW was a full sound extravaganza at the time . Apes not so much. Watch the film again today, but better than my almost shocked multiple times experience Thursday .
