The count is fine. In term of recent BP winners, it's following more of the expansion pattern of The King's Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, and A Beautiful Mind, and Chicago only gradually expanded after new year. All of those finished over $135m.

Are we seeing the same count? It is expanding...or do you think it should be expanding even more? It seems more concerned with the awards season, not the Christmas season. It will expand all the way up until the Oscars and potentially (hopefully) after as well. ;)

For a few weeks now the marketing has been saying "Everywhere Christmas Day" 735 theaters is not everywhere.

Also, the slower expansion could be because, while it did well in 200 theaters, many thought it would do better.

Isn't it? Let's see, 50 states ... so that's 14 cinemas in each state. Let's make some adjustments for states like Hawaii and Alaska, and it's probably at 20-35 cinemas in the main states. That's everywhere, no?

That's theory. In reality it will probably be in 100+ theatres in the Los Angeles and New York area alone.

I'd say around 100 in NY and LA each more likely.

Yeah, each. So isn't that "everywhere"?

So if half of its theatres will be in New York state and California, that leaves 7-8 theatres per state for the remaining states.

Trying not to blow its load too early, excuse my language. This kind of expansion makes sense.

Fuck, two of the films I want to see (Arrival and Nocturnal Animals) when I come to the US are leaving loads of cinemas! I hope La La Land sticks around a while longer. I want to catch that one.

I wish Arrival stayed in more theaters. I hoped that people would opt for it instead for Passengers considering the reviews.

You will definitely have a chance to catch La La Land in Vegas and probably at least one of the other two.

I'd have it in 3000+. It will still do fine with a slow roll out. Just like I complained with Arrival, why take a chance when you can just cash out now? Luckily for them January is dead and will not providw any resistance.

You don't have to apologize for dick jokes 'round these parts. :P

And yeah, I get it, but it would totally clean up this week. And maybe even give us the bonus of hurting Sing!

BO sees $8m+ over 4 days for La La Land. Think that's too high.

There's a particular strategy with this time of the year though. 700+ theaters is wide enough to get the Christmas boost, but expanding into 2,000+ after awards wins/noms is smarter.

Post subject:  Re: Theater Counts (Christmas)

I think 3,000 would be a mistake. Like Libs said it would blow its load too soon. I would have gone with just over 1,000 theaters for Christmas personally. And then it would have opened here :P. I'm just mad it's not within two hours of me. That's crap when the ads say "Everywhere Christmas Day."
