I'm thinking a high 30's opening for The Revenant which would be fantastic, but it could push past $40M if the OD is big enough. I definitely see it winning today, although will it increase or drop tomorrow ?

I really did not see that happening. It's DiCaprio 75%, I'd say, with Oscar rec and Inarritu the remaining 25%.

This may be off base but between this and Frozen I feel like snow setting films being released in winter may work for people

I couldn't believe that people were low balling it to begin it. Leo + Oscar Buzz + Great Trailers/TV Ads. Assuming it does well next Thursday (Hint: it will), I expect great box office in the coming weeks.

I knew it would exceed that ridiculous low 20's tracking but still wasn't convinced of $35m. It still has an art house feel to me and, if not for Leo, that tracking probably would have been right. Leo is the difference maker.

I wasn't really convinced TR could open above $25m. So in the last 10 minutes, I just started tracking for The Revenant.

It has over twice as many pre-sold tickets for the rest of the day as TFA. I didn't get the morning shows, but compared to TFA's complete day and The Revenant's shows only after 2 pm. The Revenant is 15% ahead on the day in absolute $ and over has 2.5-1 advantage on shows after 2 pm, a direct comparison. I have no idea what it means, but it is doing quite well in my sample.

Means nothing as you can't compare presales for a movie that's just opening and a movie in theaters for the weeks.

That's a GREAT hold for SW7. Given that TR did so great SW7 held MUCH better than Avatar on Thursday, hopefully this doesn't mean a weak Friday.
