How on Earth did San Andreas open to over 50 last year?

Marketing has been a complete disaster for Fox

It's hard to market a movie with no money shots, which is what ID4 is.

Great hold for Centea Intelligence.

All that needs to be said about ID4 2 is this:

July 5-7, 1996
1 N INDEPENDENCE DAY Fox $50,228,264 - 2,882 - $17,428 $96,102,252 1

June 24-26, 2016
2 N INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Fox $41,600,000 - 4,068 - $10,226 $41,600,000 1

With Deadpool already closed, Jungle Book only has to squeeze out $5 million more from bored families over the summer vacation to take the #2 spot on the domestic list.

NYSM2 isn't doing too bad considering it's a rather uninspired sequel.

Unsurprisingly, Dory ended up with a drop in the mid-40's. Even the strong names at Kj act like dumb kids when they're excited by a bunch of strong dailies.

Anyways, 155M more millions needed to beat the Crap.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” is not on the cover this week’s Entertainment Weekly, which just landed.

The stars of “Resurgence” are not all over the TV, appearing on “Ellen” or the “Tonight Show” or “Jimmy Kimmel,” showing clips.

In fact, there is dead silence surrounding the hugely expensive, highly anticipated sequel to the massive 1996 Roland Emmerich hit “Independence Day.”

That movie was released on July 3, 1996 to tie in with the actual Independence Day– July 4th weekend. This one is set for June 24th, very specifically NOT that tie in.

There have been no advance screenings, no press. There’s no press junket this weekend. My junketeer friends have received no information. There’s some kind of premiere on Monday in Los Angeles next week, a couple of days before the opening night in theaters. But nothing else is set for New York at all, and that is a bad bad sign.

But the cast did sneak into New York last week for stealth publicity: they rang the opening bell at the New York stock Exchange. They appeared in an AOL Build Speaker series, whatever that is. They were on Sirius XM Radio. On Friday, there was a premiere in Mexico City.

Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone, but “IDR” is coming. The cast must be wondering what’s going on. Or they know.

Maybe it’s a huge $200 million flop. But Fox should have counted on the good will of fans who’ve waited 20 years (like me) to see what happened. Alas, this much we do know: Will Smith passed on the script. Randy Quaid is MIA. Margaret Colin and Mary McDonnell didn’t return. Robert Loggia and James Rebhorn couldn’t return– they’re deceased. There’s a Hemsworth involved.

Fox is just coming off a disappointment with the latest “X Men” movie, which made $100 million less than the prior one domestically. Studio chief Jim Gianopolous is out the door and replaced by Stacey Snider (who should do great things). So if “IDR” is really really not good, they are downplaying it. But my guess is Gianopolous’s exit news, which came this week, is tied to “IDR” and its box office fate.

Or maybe it’s really really great– and we will all be pleasantly surprised. But there are also eleven — 11– writer credits. Five of them are for the screenplay!

PS What did Will Smith know that we didn’t know? The studio shot of Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth in space suits is worrisome. If they go into space to fight the aliens, the whole “ID4” vibe is altered. Of course, Will is no expert on space movies, as we know.

Pretty much my observation too. I noticed little to none of marketing from the press cohorts. No advertorials, no tie-in shows, no nothing. It did not feel like a blockbuster-type marketing campaign to me. All I can say is they pulled much of the marketing budget heading into the release.

Too bad A24 didn't get The Neon Demon, they probably would've done a better job with it, although it probably was never going to do big business to begin with.

It would have followed Green Room's path: muscular debut in the big cities, ignored entirely upon expansion to the suburbs. It is tough going for a violent and/or unusual genre movie since the specialty circuit outside the cities is so driven by an older audience gravitating toward Love & Friendship, The Meddler, etc.

The Neon Demon would have done better than it is now if it had followed Green Room's path. It has a weird release strategy. It should be sold as an edgy horror exploitation. But they sell it like an arthouse movie. It is not even playing in the downtown area here.

A24 is already planning to go nationwide Friday with Swiss Army Man. Now how wide who knows.

Quote:
Said distributor A24 Sunday: “The truly one-of-a-kind comedy that The New York Times raved was ‘stunningly original’ enjoyed sold out shows and terrific exit poll scores all weekend long. Polling also showed that the overwhelmingly under 35 audience are absolutely loving the audacious, entertaining and heartwarming world created by rising stars Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert as well as the touching and hilarious performances from Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano.” Swiss Army Man will head out nationwide July 1.

I think they might be jumping the gun. Hopefully they don't go into more than a couple hundred theaters.

I agree. But in the sequel to the movie that solidified him as a movie star? Fox probably would've made a little more internationally, and the opening here would've been higher than $41 million. The film might have had some true nostalgia going for it.

Then again, based on the article above, Fox probably doesn't care too much as they seemingly just tossed the film away.

I don't understand what is going around at Fox but this is really pathetic marketing wise specially when they thought of starting a franchise with this movie.

Paying Will Smith $50m would have just resulted in a further $50m loss for Fox. He would not have added anything to the gross. He is nothing now. Is KJ not aware of Focus, Concussion, and After Earth?

That's right. I forgot he fought aliens in all of those.

You're clutching at straws if you think just because he didn't fight aliens in those three movies that somehow people would give a shit if he were fighting aliens in Resurgence. Nobody cares about Will Smith anymore. And it wasn't just Smith that fought aliens in 1996. Goldblum also did, and he was a rather well-received character, but he had little-no effect on this sequel either.

No, no one cares about his dramatic work when he isn't involved with explosions or fighting aliens (at least not since Seven Pounds). When he does...

2012 - MIB 3 - $179m/$624ww
2008 - Hancock - $224m/$624ww
2007 - I Am Legend - $256m/$585ww

I think Fox would take those MIB 3 numbers right about now.

Bodes well for Suicide Squad.

His problem is he's not as prolific as he once was and he's making smaller movies (if that can really be seen as being a problem).

And yes, Goldblum was well received as well and that makes them comparable as draws. :funny:
