surely the final movie of the franchise should have received a decent boost. Even Breaking Dawn Part 2 received a boost. MJ1 didn't even have bad legs showing WOM was probably not bad.

It did very good under current box office climate. More than 66% higher opening day than 007, which many may not have been expected earlier this year. Compare to how 007 did against final twilight several years ago.

I didn't see a lot of promotion for this on tv or in theatres when I was watching movies frequently.

Really, this isn't anything that hasn't been discussed to death in other threads.

Perhaps he was simply creating a parody of the topic's repetitive nature.

Yeah, probably not.

Bad internet connection zwackerm?

There are no games in a series called The Hunger GAMES.

If the games angle is true, it makes me wonder how much of the first film's audience were interested by the plot, and just how many of them were SATISFIED with what the film delivered. For a synopsis that is basically about a fight to the death, The Hunger Games was fucking tame.

The Hunger Games performance is like the Hangover. People get disappointed when you sell them a sequel that isn't an improvement over the first one. You'd even lose more audience when spreading a third part over 2 movies that is are already less wanted at that point.

3 films in 2 years, 4 films in 44 months (not adequate enough time for hype/anticipation to build), mediocre reception (audience/critical) towards the final two films which were based on divisive source material. And the split on top of that.

You can apply all that to Twilight and that didn't have dramatic decreases.

Twilight never broke out much past its fanbase, which allowed it to stay more consistent.

THG's built-in base seems to be of similar size ITO $ gross, 250-300M. The factors I listed above drove away the 100-125M that were being pulled from outside that base in the first two films.

The Hunger Games itself was the biggest draw. A dark war movie as 3rd book is less appealing to many especially when split in 2. I don't know if Peeta and Gale and the love triangle aspect took off in the film series. Worrying about that during war seems below Katniss at least with Jennifer Lawrence's older than her years with a world of responsibility on her shoulder interpretation. Plus Gale having nothing to do for so long in the series hurt him registering. I think the human story in MJ didn't connect

^ I's also agree with that. The biggest human draw was Katniss and Prim story and not the love triangle which didn't help the series and both the MJ movies completely ignore the love story while trying to distance itself from Twilight. The biggest hook of the series was seeing Lawrence play Katniss, even the emotional connection of Katniss with rest of the districts (captured beautifully in THG with departure of Rue) and uprising of the riot was not really nurtured in MJ movies. All the political stuffs and good acting never connected as well.

I hope so. But it probably won't.

It won't make $300m with this opening. SW will be another big opener and Sisters is also opening that weekend. I don't think MJ2 can survive that. BD2 also didn't hold better than BD1 so I am guessing it would be the case here as well.

It does seem like it could stabilize and should do over 280 with a small chance at 300. Still, I think it dropped for several reasons,
1)Splitting the book in two: Really narrative wise, they could have probably cut it to one movie, it might have been close to 3 hours but it could have been done.
2)WOM from the first part, it had its problems and I am sure that hurt it. This one drags too (gets back to 1 here) there is too much setup for the battle of the capitol. I think there could have been a way to shorten that, but it seems like it was done just to make a second film.
3) It is a downer, the ending is a sad ending. This isn't Harry Potter or ROTK with huge battle and then a mostly happy ending. Many characters get killed and so much sadness happens.

At the rate it's going, it will match Mockingjay 1's grosses by next weekend. 300 million is on the table, but it will certainly have to not die when Star Wars opens. 290 seems like a good bet, and it will at least out gross BD1.

Which isn't a milestone or an achievement in any way.
