Someone should've made a sub-300 million club. Wtf though, hopefully it goes up.

It's still a humongous opening, but the muted reception to Mockingjay Part 1 likely zapped some of the buzz this one should've had as the conclusion to the series.

This all makes complete sense to me as a fan of the books, though. Mockingjay is by far the worst book of the trilogy; Catching Fire is the best. The movies have followed the same trajectory.

I think Mockingjay is the best book. It is the only one that is really daring.

I think the grimness of Mockingjay is hardly as appealing as the first two films/books, at least to the general moviegoer. They're basically different genres, and you can tell from the trailers. By changing the formula, you leave out the thing that a lot of people want to see, and that's the Games. A political/war movie without the Games just doesn't generate quite as much excitement. I think it completely makes sense.

But it's not a book that can sustain 257 minutes worth of film.

What's the opposite of disappointed? Elated? Over the fucking Moon? Whatever it is, I'm feeling that. Love it when shitty movies disappoint.

Well with a lower opening this could follow the trend of the films having better multipliers than the other.

Did you get a stiffy over that? :)

It can still crawl past $300 million if the opening day is, indeed, $49 million, but barely. If the OD is $47 million, we're likely looking at sub-$290 million.

I'm not at that age yet where I box office results to get hard.

WOKJ, where $2 mil on opening day is apparently the difference between <$290 mil total and $300+ mil total

There is a 4% difference between $47 million and $49 million. There is also a 4% difference between $289 million and $301 million.

So go suck it. :)

Mockingjay 1 made 16.355% of its total gross on its opening day. The same multiplier with a $47 million OD gives MJ2 a $287 million total. With a $49 million OD a $299.6 million total.

I'm waiting for real numbers. These numbers came in after what, 2 showings worth on the East Coast.

Heh, I knew the Hunger Games hype was far lower than it's been at any point, but I didn't think it was low enough for a 9 digit opening to be in question.

I think it's exceedingly likely Star Wars OD > Mockingjay 2 OW if the opening day is $49M.

If night business is solid than maybe it can scrap $50M, but the buzz for MJ2 always felt low IMO. However, I never thought it would open this much under MJ1. If these early estimates hold it's going to barely get past $100M and O's $98M prediction won't look so crazy afterall. Also, those are some really mediocre numbers for both Night Before and Secret in their Eyes. This year has been so shitty for mid-performers.

Where is the finale factor???! MJ2 is an important film. It will be studied for all the wrong reasons.
