So I'm not really sure how this one is gonna do. Will Smith hasn't headlined a film since After Earth (yikes) and Margot Robbie isn't exactly that well known yet. The trailer is fine and it's the #1 most advertised film of the last week on television.

Right now I'm gonna say 24/70. If it does open with over 30+ than kudos to Smith to still having starpower.

Pretty much an identical thread. How badly [do you predict it] will bomb? =will it bomb or will it succeed? = what do you predict?

I have seen hardly any marketing for it. At this point, I would be shocked by a 20 million opening, though that could certainly change if the campaign gets more aggressive.

It's main problem is that all the buzz has been entered on Sniper and the 50 Shades. It will have to pick up steam very quickly in the coming week if its a chance for 30m+ OW.

Looks like a gross similar to Seven Pounds.

$30m+ OW. Count it.

I think this will be a solid hit, although perhaps not a blockbuster. An opening in the low $20M range sounds right.

FWIW re: the ads qualm mentioned above, I have seen many ads for it on TV.

Yeah, this film won't be huge, but if it is good, it will be the first step in rebuilding Smith's image.

Won't be surprised if it makes $30m total. Looks completely bland and forgettable.

It's been strong on Twitter for nearly a month. Can't see how it only opens to low 20s.

The marketing for this is, pun totally intended, UNFOCUSED. What's the con? What's happening? Will Smith and Margot Robbie banter? okay....

Maybe it's because I've seen the trailer, but I think the marketing is selling the "pretty people con other people" concept pretty directly?

Anyway, I think this can do well. It is Smith's first R-rated movie since Bad Boys II, but the range people are giving it here (low-20s/mid-60s) sounds about right.

I think we're just supposed to get excited about Will Smith a) being "back" and b) trying to be a black Danny Ocean/Rusty Ryan hybrid. They just want you to know that the film will be slick because of Smith. It's very one-note, and films that market in this way usually fail because gone are the times when one thing (especially a star) alone can attract the masses to the multiplexes. I think nobody gives a shit that Will Smith is in a new film.

Algren has it absolutely right.

There are no stakes in this movie. All I see is Will Smith mentors Margot Robbie and falls for her. Who cares?

Frankly, Will Smith ain't a great actor, and this charisma-driven suave role, he doesn't have it any longer, if he even did have it once.

I honestly don't see the hook. It looks like something Johnny Depp would star in and flop in. Rum Diary 2 or something.

Yeah I've seen the trailer, I guess that's what I was referring to. People con each other, there's some 'humorous/testy' relationship between the two leads, but like BK said, where are the stakes? Why should I care? I'm kindof bored by the concept already. It comes across as very pedestrian.

It basically looks like Heartbreakers with a couple rather than a mother/daughter. And maybe a bit more sensual? lol. I think it looks like fun myself.

Also, it gets bonus points for using "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" in the ads, which is one of my faves.

Post subject:  Re: Focus predictions

Heartbreakers is a good comparison actually. It should still manage a $60-$80m gross.

Wasn't this going to be a Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart film? lol. I MUCH prefer it the way it is.

Although Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone would have made it good.

The online buzz for this movie was pretty hot. Will Smith and his female co star are hot as he'll and this movie looks like a like of fun. Also the writers and Directors have a good track record. Definitely see a hit. Also with a very baits oscar film coming this December Will smith looks to have a great year. The way this movie was shot looks gorgeous. I would not mind seeing this in IMAX.

The trailer even ends with Smith saying he still has "it."

Smith certainly does work hard for his image. And the crazy thing is that people actually believe it.

Post subject:  Re: Focus predictions

The trailers for Focus do seem to be missing the actual stakes - is this movie simply about a con artist and a hot woman? Still, I very much want to see it and there's no reason to believe Smith's fanbase won't open this to $30m. With the 'R' rating, there HAS to be some substance to the story.
