 Re: Friday Estimates
So The Maze Runner has no chance of hitting $30m anymore. It looks as if trixster has won.

 Re: Friday Estimates
A Walk Among the Tombstones opens to less than The Expendables 3, and with no leak. The Liam Neeson action-thriller popularity was short-lived as we watch his slow demise into box office failure. Non-Stop barely made $200m worldwide. The Expendables 3 would have blown passed $200m without the leak. Even with the leak, it will comfortably beat Non-Stop. One thing is for sure, Taken 3 will be an interesting box office spectacle.

 Re: Friday Estimates
Tombstones will open with more than Expendables still, IMO. I'm not convinced these are real estimates. they look like projections.

 Re: Friday Estimates
Boxoffice.com and The Hollywood reporter are saying the same thing. Both The Maze Runner and Tombstone had pretty weak Thursday preview numbers so these Friday numbers are not shocking. http://pro.boxoffice.com/latest-news/20 ... solid-428k

 Re: Friday Estimates
It's entirely possible that it does. But still, Taken 2 opened to $49.5m, Non-Stop to $28.8m....is a $16m opening for Tombstones really that great for Neeson? Within 2 years he's gone from top action guy to boring action-thriller guy. Living on the popularity and awesomeness of Taken only lasts so long before audiences need something different.

I didn't say it did, but it suggests that his popularity is significantly waning..

 Re: Friday Estimates
A Walk Amongst Ye Olde Tombstones will probably lose at least $8m this weekend due to its title. Films like Taken, Non-Stop or even Gravatar make more money. He's Like Just Not that Into You, Before I Ask You Again Wish I Never Met You: Just Another Day in the Life of Survival.
sorry I've been drinking wine
but my comment on catchy names STANDS goldummit!

 Re: Friday Estimates
Totally agree with the idea that titles are important. It could totally be a reason for Tombstones' lesser opening.

It's not an action thriller. It's a dark mystery, and only cost 28 million to make. It'll be another easy hit for him probably making at least 90-120 WW. And with a 5.8 Friday it still has a good chance at 17-19 million. Unknown and The Grey both had 3+ multipliers from Friday.

 Re: Friday Estimates
Better than I expected for TIWILY. About what I expected for the others. Too bad Maze Runner wasn't able to be huge, wouldve made studios more keen on releasing more intriguing stuff in September.

And I didn't say it wasn't profitable or successful...just that it doesn't look good for Neeson's career as an action star if Tombstones makes less than Non-Stop, and Non-Stop made less than Taken 2.

 Re: Friday Estimates
actually to prove my point, This is Where I Leave You is another one of those unfortunately titled movies.... could have made more $$ with a better title, I'm convinced.
are there any examples of these awkwardly titled movies making a lot of money? another example that comes to mind is It's Kind of a Funny Story, which I would have seen by now if it had a better title.

 Re: Friday Estimates
Well that's just stupid reasoning. And no, it is nothing like Taken. He doesn't kick ass (In fact he gets it handed to him.) There's a reason this series which has been around for almost 30 years and was in development for 20 didn't get a lot of support from studios. Besides, He's already been in flops like The Next Three Days, The A-Team, and Third person. It's his 5th hit of the year. And he can open films on his own to over 15 million. Only Cruise, Smith, and Denzel have that luxury right now.
Neeson's 62, his surprise box office pull was always going to be limited. But surprisingly it's still going strong for 6 years now.

 Re: Friday Estimates
There are a lot of titles this year and last with annoyingly unmemorable titles (and for me, they all seem similar), such as:
This Is Where I Leave You And So It Goes Wish I Was Here
These are just movies that I see the title to and don't have enough patience or care to explore the film, its story, stars or anything about it. There are more titles like this than the three I listed, but I've forgotten them.

And despite your generally incorrect opinions about box office and action movies, I agree with you more often than I'd admit sober.

 Re: Friday Estimates
Quote: After what were soft matinees today, the sci-fi action thriller The Maze Runner took off this evening and is expected to chase in an estimated $11M today (that includes the $1.1M from last night) for a three-day weekend gross of around $30M to $32M. Saturday should be another decent moviegoing night for this YA picture which stars MTV’s Teen Wolf himself, Dylan O’Brien. It also got an A- CinemaScore from its core audience which should give a nice multiple. http://deadline.com/2014/09/maze-runner ... ou-837209/Glad to see Maze Runner ending up on the high end of things despite early estimates. Though this article has it wrong. Dylan O'Brien is not the lead of MTV's Teen Wolf, though honestly he's the reason to watch. Quote: 1). The Maze Runner (FOX), 3,064 theaters / $11M to $11.5M Fri. (includes $1.1M late nights) / 3-day est. cume: $30M to $32M / Wk 1
2). A Walk Among the Tombstones (UNI), 2,712 theaters / $4.75M Fri. (includes $428K in late nights) / 3-day cume: $13.9M to $14M / Wk 1
3). This is Where I Leave You (WB), 2,868 theaters / $4M Fri. (includes est. $100K in late nights) / 3-day cume: $11.7M / Wk 1
4). No Good Deed (SONY), 2,175 theaters (0) / $2.8M to $3M Fri. / 3-day cume: $9.5M to $10M (-67%) / Total cume: $39M to $40M / Wk 2
5). Dolphin Tale 2 (WB), 3,656 theaters (0) / $2.1M Fri. / 3-day cume: $8.2M to $8.5M (-48%) / Total cume: $26.3M / Wk 2
6). Guardians of the Galaxy (DIS), 2,846 theaters (-258) / $1.39M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.3M / Total cume: $313.9M / Wk 8
7/8). Let’s Be Cops (FOX), 2,312 theaters (-443) / $750K Fri. / 3-day cume: $2.5M / Total cume: $77M / Wk 6
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PAR), 2,348 theaters (-609) / $650K Friday / 3-day cume: $2.75M / Total cume: $185M / Wk 7
9). The Drop (FSL), 1,192 theaters (+383) / $675K Fri. / 3-day cume: $2.13M (-52%) / Total cume: $7.7M / Wk 2
10). If I Stay (WB), 2,371 theaters (-669) / $550K Fri. / 3-day cume: $1.85M / Total cume: $48M / Wk 5 Terrible drop for The Drop when it added so many theaters. Though it faced fierce competition. That would also be a poor hold for Dolphin Tale. It had no real direct competition unless a lot of kids are going to Maze Runner. A Walk Among The Tombstones really should have opened the weekend after Labor Day. Could have carved out a nice opening on a dead weekend.
