If it is a good movie, i could see numbers similar to POTC:DMC. But if it is mediocre to bad, I could see sub 350 million, or even sub 300 million.

I was going to use the Hunger Games comparison. But Hunger Games had the advantage of having a huge breakout star. So unless Pratt can become a HUGE name, which is possible, I don't see it increasing much.

Hunger Games just hit a nearly-impossible-to-top peak - Catching Fire is actually the first follow-up to a $400+ million grosser to surpass the original's gross. Plenty of movies have made around $300 million and then increased from there, so Guardians easily could. However, it's been a while since we actually saw that happen (Despicable Me 2 is the only example from the last few years that comes to mind), so I'm not certain. I definitely think it'll match the original, at least.

Also, the first Despicable Me didn't even get very close to $300 million...

As for this thread. You know, a few years ago, I'd have said yes, but ever since Iron Man 2 decreased from the first film...who knows.

Pirates type of increase could happen, I think it'll be 360-410. For now I'm gonna go with no.

Then again, Transformers 2 managed a pretty great increase too and I wouldn't say Transformers' WoM was significantly better than Guardians'.

WOM is good but so was IRON MANs. IM2 didnt exactly explode compared to it's predecessor.

I think GOTG is close to its ceiling atm.

GOTG is at its ceiling at 300 million, but 623 million isn't the ceiling for The Avengers 2?

Also, Iron Man 2 did open to almost 130 million. It was the poor legs that killed it.

He means all MCU movies that do not have "The Avengers" in the title.

The sequel's performance will be interesting to watch, but I guess only time will tell. I really want to see what AOU does next year before talking about a cap on audience growth for these movies, but it's in a great position to atleast flirt with IM3 type numbers.

I think it only has a shot at $400 million if it is the same quality as the first. If it is just a solid Marvel-sequel like Iron Man 3, it will probably make around $350 million.

Expectations for it's opening weekend were a lot higher than that, and the crap wom had yet to sink in at that point.

It should be good for $350m minimum but $400m is likely.

Its final gross will be determined by two key factors (outside of quality):

1. The Avengers 2 effect. Will Age of Ultron make people want to see GotG more - or not.

2. What the summer 2017 competition is like. Right now we just don't know.

Nope. I don't think it will be bigger than IM3.

I'm sure that when I finally get around to seeing it, I'll like GOTG better than The Avengers. WOM certainly seems at least a bit more positive to me.

I think it is crystal clear that the era of blockbuster sequels exploding over their blockbuster predecessors is over. Curiosity is once again winning out ala the 1990s.

Doubt the next big films like JURASSIC WORLD 2 or STAR WARS 8 see any sort of increase despite goodwill from previous version.

Logan, john wick 2 and guardians 2 would say otherwise. Of course films like JW and even SW will decrease, they already reached max potential and curiosity with the first. I'm really don't see a change at all other that there has been a lot of better than average sequels lately.

There is also the sequel for Pitch Perfect and Fast series (aside from Fate) that also increased from last entries. This year has different circumstances for the sequels so its not entirely correct to base these assumptions on a few movies.
