I think Ex3 will end up in the 7-8 million range. It looks like they are just using Lucy's preview to OD to project. Lucy played a lot younger, and the leak may have softened the previews. We shall see.

OK for Expendables. Awful for the other two.

I will take these numbers as actuals and say everything sucks.

ouch for The Giver. I think that Cops # will go up with late night showings, it's not even 4 here.

True. It's more of a night time movie.

I guess it was inevitable that Expendables 3 would post a weak gross. The previous sequel dropped despite near-universal expectations that it would at least match the original's opening weekend, and this one trotted out yet another pretty standard storyline with the PG-13 rating that the fanbase whined about when it was rumored for 2. I'm guessing that this will be the last that we hear from the franchise.

I'll probably see The Giver at some point in the next week, but it has just looked "off" from the get-go. It was always going to be up against a wall in that it would ironically look derivative of the YA adaptations that actually took many of their tropes from The Giver itself, and the action-oriented ad campaign bears hardly any resemblance to the slower, more cerebral approach that the source material actually takes.

A fourth movie is already planned. They are planning to get Jackie Chan to co-star. All they need to do is not leak the whole fucking movie, make a high-stakes action thriller, cut the comedy, make it R-rated, don't market it exactly the same as all the rest, and get a good acclaimed director....and they'll be back in business.

Or just Dwayne Johnson to save the franchise. The Expendables versus The Rock would surely make $50m opening weekend.

Honestly the comedy saved this one. The action was so tame at points it was a real shame as the set pieces were definitely the best of the series so far. I hope there is an unrated.

I was already announced that there will be an R-rated DVD.

EXP should just add Liam Neeson and The Rock.

Yep looks like the slump is back on, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. Just because GOTG and TMNT over performed doesn't mean everything was going to succeed, but now atleast we know it's officially the start of the dog days of summer.

So The Expendables 3 might not hit a $50 million total, eh?

This bodes well for Sin City 2.

It is possible. I think a drop in the US was expected. Nothing new was added to make it fresh. This is purely for long-time fans of action movies.

That would be a 100 Million grosser for sure. 150 or more if they added a badass Jennifer Lawrence ;). I'd actually watch that Expendables movie.

Honestly Expendables 3 would have done about this # even if it hadn't leaked online. It was always going to drop again just like the second dropped from the first. It might have done an extra 2 Million OW without the leak, IMO.

Being so sure on a topic as unknown as a leak and how much it affects box office grosses is just ignorant and stupid, Mike.

I said IMO :P. Being online certainly didn't stop Taken from being such a huge hit. Nor did it do much damage to Wolverine, which leaked before it was released and was a higher profile film. Franchise fatigue was setting in. Most of these actors can't anchor a movie on their own to hit status. The novelty of the first is what made it a big hit. Then the second dropped from that and it was inevitable the third would drop from the second.

I'm not disagreeing with you either. I'm just saying that it's stupid to be so sure of it because there's not even any indication to support either theory. There are hundreds of factors to consider too.

I always felt like the movie leak was an inside job because those involved knew it was going to disappoint, with box office and with audiences, so it now has an easy scapegoat to explain why it did poorly.

Nor has it noticeably hurt the dozens upon dozens of films that leak online, often days or weeks before release, in Awards season.

Who could possibly gain something in that scenario? Particularly when ICE is almost certainly going to be arresting them in the coming weeks?
