Huge!!! I thought this had 50m ow potential but not a week after GOTG's huge opening. 60m would be nuts but great for the BO. |

That gif just makes me so angry and want to punch somebody. Its so douchey. The only thing that would make it more douchey is by putting Fred Durst in it. |

Perhaps this is a good sign for The Expendables 3. |

This has gone from $40's to $60's and its still before most of the evening shows. Also, this is a bit entertaining: In mid October 2009, it was announced that Viacom's subsidiary network Nickelodeon had purchased all of Mirage's rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property for $9.75 million, thus terminating all deals with 4Kids and Time Warner. Something tells me WB might not be happy about that decision... |

Three back-to-back huge weekend openers, and they were all films that many really doubted would do well at the box-office, too. |

Is it a rescue? I think the summer box office is still going to be down from last year. |

That hold for GOTG would be pretty insane as well. |

Variety is projecting a $12M weekend for The Hundred-Foot Journey, which would be really, really good too. Given that it skews old as hell, it could do $60M+. |

There's a chance that both movies will do $45 m +, which would be only the third time in the last 14 months (since June 2013) that two movies have done that much in the same weekend (22 Jump Street/Dragon, CF/Frozen). Considering prior to this year, August has only ever seen 3 movies ever do $60 m +, and 5 movies do $55 m +, to see two $60 m + openers back to back is unheard of this time of year. |

It shouldn't be though. The first 3 weeks if August gave proven BO potential yet the studios have avoided them for the most part. Yet they are happy to spam months like May to ridiculous levels. |

Unless it decreases big Saturday (doubtful) it'll probably be #5 in terms of August openers. eegawd |

Didn't realize TMNT has such big fanbase but I did see a lot of kids in the showing I went. If it gets families then yeah $60m could happen just that I never expected it after Guardians breakout and at the tail end of summer. |

Nikki is predicting a $47.7m weekend for GoTG that would be insanely good hold given the competition. http://nikkifinke.com/box-office-teenag ... torm-800k/ |

If Guardians does that 3day tally ($47.7 m), it would only need a 3.5 multiplier for the rest of its run to get to $300 m, which is doable. |

Guardians of the Galaxy would join a very short list of big openers to have a second weekend drop under 50%, too. I think 2010 was the last time anything that's opened over $90 million has done it (Alice and Toy Story 3). And if you remove animated films and those with holiday second weekends, I think that list only includes Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Alice in Wonderland. And those three had very weak second weekend competiton. |

I never really got the sub-$40 million predictions for TMNT. I was never really on board with the franchise as a kid, but people my age love those turtles. Even if this looked like crap people were eager to see them on the big screen, I guess. I seem to recall CA2's second weekend being overestimated, so I'll try holding off on getting excited about GOTG's hold, but anything under 55% would be great for it, and it definitely looks likely to pull that off. This is looking like a potentially great weekend for the box office. Exciting! |

I think it will do Avengers drop for 50.<some>% but they could still be over-estimating its family appeal specially if they are swoon to TMNT. |

This is looking like a potentially great weekend for the box office. Exciting! My almost 4yr old son loves the Turtles. And I loved it back in the early 90s. That's quite a big demo range for the film - hence I was also surprised with the low balling. GotG holding with a sub 50% drop would be amazing considering the competition. I hope it does! |
