Chef decreases a bit from estimates thought it would increase hopefully that is not the general trend of the night.

$16,797,385 for Million Ways, 3.8 million less than Ted's OD.

Decent increase for Neighbors.

Neighbors was finally underestimated, and by a pretty healthy amount too.

Ida is having a really nice run in limited release, for what seems like a quiet foreign language film with no big festival buzz or big names.

$32,551,098 - Not so bad for it from the estimates perspective but still a HUGE drop.

Godzilla dropped even more than estimated.

Maleficent - $69,431,298

Less than Twilight, but still indicates a really strong Sunday hold. Should do well over the weekdays.

Is there any basis for the Twilight comparison beyond the similar opening weekend gross?

Damn that Godzilla number looks even worse. Maleficent most likely will get close to Twilight total IMO.

Er what? I don't read Algren's post (he is in my Ignore list) unless its start of a thread. My post originated from Jon's comparison of Maleficent and Twilight opening. I think even with summer weekdays the general frontloading this summer and competition ahead will get Maleficent only close to Twilight and will result in the former missing $200m mark.

I could see a comparison between the two with similar demographic appeals?

Can you explain the similarity in demographics?

For me, it seems like Maleficent is targeting families and Twilight is targeting teenage YA-reading girls.

:er:

Was Twilight aimed to children?

Post subject:  Re: Weekend Actuals 22/14

^ Maleficent still has a bigger female audience even though not entirely the same one as Twilight but then again Jolie's appeal would definitely brought in some frontloading. Not only that the families are surely going to abandon this one when HTTYD2 arrives in 2 weeks and the big summer weekdays doesn't seems to have started just yet.

My comparison was simply that both were non-sequels with female leads.

So their almost identical openings was a coincidence?

I believe that was the point Jon was making here.
