Godzilla (2014) INTL
The 1998 version did $243m at the time where OS markets weren't as big. This one has a potential to do $500m OS as well, plus the marketing on this one is very good.
It will have Spider-Man before it but once it opens there isn't a huge OS opener (X-Men movies are mid-sized OS hits at best) which means this could get good legs if the movie turns out to be good. I also think it could be the big breakout of the year in OS markets and reaches $1b mark.
For now I say $500m OS a bit lower than Spidey.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
So any predictions as to how this will do in OS markets? I know the new Asian trailer is all sorts of great but the overall marketing here in Singapore is kinda weak even compared to X-Men.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
If it breaks out in the U.S. ($300m+), $1b WW could be possible...

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
The 1998 movie did well but it wasn't a $1b juggernaut or even close to it. The last one did close to $350m OS adjusted (not 100% accurate). This one does look great but so did the last one. With market expansion it can do $500m OS but I don't think its sure to get past that mark. I think $500m OS is a good target for it though the potential is there for it to get past $1b mark.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
I'm thinking that despite the fall of Godzilla in Japan over the years, this one will come off as a tribute rather than travasty (1998 version), and do very well there. Involving Ken Watanabe ("Let them fight") should help as well.

This should EASILY clear $500 mil OS. I would peg its target at around $650 mil.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
I don't see this one doing as well in mature markets. I think it can do well in China, but ultimately I see around $400m overseas for a $600m total.

lol
Only 6 original films have ever made over 600 million. Titanic, Avatar, Harry Potter 1, Alice in Wonderland, Frozen, and 2012. 500 million is no easy task, let alone 600 million. 475 million would be my major success point.

Thanks for putting that gun. I have been saying the same thing $500m OS is still a big feet though I would say Godzilla doesn't really scream original it should definitely be considered as a reboot.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
Or Rehash. I'm not saying the marketing hasn't been effective. But this seems to one of the most online hyped films in a while, and I've heard nothing. And all I do is hang out with people that this film should be numero uno for. No one I talk to thinks it looks good and they remember how terrible the 98 film was. I think a 650 WW total would be amazing for this, and no doubt people will be disappointed.

Aside from China I don't see it getting much from Japan.

Outside of this board claiming Godzilla having the best marketing campaign ever, I hardly ever see or hear anything about the movie. We've seen Internet making huge hype out of movies and then they "disappoint" after they don't meet the stratospheric expectations, while in reality they did good on the BO.

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
My $500m OS total was based on aggressive marketing and great WOM for the movie. Seeing the marketing in few Asian markets that I stay nearby I don't think it will get there.

The monster movie grossed $1.6 million from 596 screens in France over its first day. Early numbers coming in from Australia aren't far behind, with the giant lizard taking $1.2 million from Oz.
Indonesia follows with a $325k opening day from 308 screens. Sweden posted a $316k opening day from 54 screens, while Scandinavian neighbors Norway posted a $210k bow from 127 screens. Belgium came in with a $167k bow from 87 screens and Finland concluded its opening day with $71k from 82 screens. The opening numbers in OS markets are looking good.

Many are complaining that the human characters are dull, that Cranston is the best actor but gets killed off in favor of Aaron Johnson and that Godzilla doesn't have much screentime

Re: Godzilla (2014) INTL
After watching the film I am sure it will do great with regular critics its some of the people who might be disappointed. Its still going to have great WOM because its has a pleasing ending though its now a big crowd pleaser. I do agree with the human characters have more time which could be good in cases, but the problem is that their story does not have a good emotional feel to it.
