People are predicting huge numbers just because it is Marvel, but I don't know, Could be another geek oriented film |

I don't think it will. Most people have never heard of the Guardians and they will all need to be introduced in one movie. It's probably the least known Marvel property to be made into a movie IMO. If it sucks I see Blade numbers $70-80m. If it's good, I'd say X-men and F4 numbers $140-150m. WW I would say $250-300, I think it would appeal to overseas markets. |

The problem still stays in OS markets as well. Disney will have to introduce these characters very well. I don't think many OS audience read second-tier superhero comic books. |

It should be able to do Captain America/Thor numbers if it looks good and is marketed well. At worst I see a Daredevil/Ghostrider numbers. |

I think it'll be big. They just have to obviously market more of Rocket Raccoon who looks fantastic and awesome from the D23 footage that leaked (and everything else in that footage makes this look like a much different Marvel film which isn't a bad thing). |

I don't know about a REALLY big hit, but it has potential. The leaked footage looks great and the buzz is very positive so far, but this will still be a hard sell to mainstream audiences. They need to tie this to The Avenger's as much as possible IMO. A cameo from RDJ or Hemsworth would really help, but I can understand if they would like keeping that kind of stuff underwraps until people actually saw the movie. I have a feeling Rocket Raccoon will be a BIG sell towards kids though. Not that kid appeal alone will automatically make this a huge success, but some family appeal is better than none. |

I think the Marvel brand is a HUUUUUGE pull nowadays. That alone will probably help it to open above $50 million. |

You can't really prove that until Thor 2 comes out. |

If Thor 2 can do like... 75/200, then we'll know that the Marvel name means something. |

Actually, let's say 75/225 |

Marvel name alone cannot get this to open big. A lot of general audience will not know these characters and unless there is some tie-in to Avengers its not going to connect with them. For now though Marvel and superhero genre is doing very strong so this will do well. I am thinking $150m but $200m will be a big ask. If the marketing really impresses and makes this as a event then it could be easy for this to find audience worth of $200m. |

Isn't it a given that Thor 2 will open over 100m? |

It's hard making a prediction without any official footage, but I'm guessing Marvel will go all out with this one since it's still such an unknown property. Even so this should still be good for at least a $40M+ opening. I'll say for now 45/130. |

I know almost nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy. There's a raccoon and a taking tree voice by Vin Diesel. It's a Marvel property and set in space. That's it. How strong is the Marvel name? For me, I will continue to go to every Marvel superhero movie related to The Avengers in the theater until they make one I don't enjoy. To make this work though, they must connect it to The Avengers. Otherwise it will have a modest gross at best. |

I don't know your expectations for this one, but for a movie that has a raccoon and a tree that are superheros I have a really low expectation bar set. This doesn't look as awful as it could've. |

My expectations? I didn't really have any beyond thinking it was a total CGI movie. Now I see that it's live action, I LOL'd. Looks lame. |

Still too early but it will be very difficult to market for sure....superhero movie or not. |

It has a great cast, a talented director and an epic scope. The fact that it has no pre-existing brand value is pretty meaningless. Thor, Captain America and Iron Man didn't have any worthy pre-established brand value either. Everything will depend on how good the film will look in the marketing. That first picture tells pretty much nothing. The fact that it's an epic scifi adventure film should work to its benefit. And this should also make it fairly easy to market. Nothing about the premise says that it's a "superhero" film. I know it's part of the Marvel world, but really, it sounds a lot more similar to Star Wars or the current reincarnation of Star Trek. |

Tuukka wrote: The fact that it has no pre-existing brand value is pretty meaningless. Thor, Captain America and Iron Man didn't have any worthy pre-established brand value either. That's just not true. They had about 60 years of being in the public's conciousness - they are the big superheroes that everyone knows the names of. Nobody (apart from geeky comicbook readers of this specific comic) knows who Drax and Gamora are, and nobody cares to see a movie about them either, especially one that has a talking raccoon. ![]() |
