Is Catching Fire doing better than Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry in China?

Gravity is doing very well, but also The Hunger Games just isn't popular here. I'm so glad I live in a country that loves Escape Plan more than Jennifer Lawrence crap. Which shows once again that China is not a Communist country... THE HUNGER GAMES movies are communist propaganda movies (in a good way) par excellence... It doesn't show anything of the sort. It's not advertised as a pro-Communist experience, so Chinese moviegoers' decision to attend or not is based on whether it looks entertaining or star power - the film has pretty much zero star power for Chinese people and it doesn't look too entertaining either. It'll be making next to nothing this time next week. Now, going back to the Communist comment, if there was a Chinese-made pro-Communist movie, it would be manufactured to be successful; we're talking tons of commercials, posters, in so many cinemas with tons of showtimes etc., on all the national entertainment TV shows, staying in cinemas for much longer than 30 days, and all other movies (especially Intl ones) would be forced to open later. The film would be a hit. I suppose, based on that result, you would say that that's proof that China is a Communist country. Truth is, there are just too many factors in cinema trends to be able to bluntly pull out the political card and label an entire country as either one thing or another. Now, in my experience, many Chinese are not Communist, but then many also are too, and there attendance (or lack of) of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire neither proves one thing or disproves another. Is irony (without a smiley) known in China? There's nothing ironic about your statement. You can't play that card, meine freunden!

I know irony when I do irony...
On the other hand, China is REALLY no communist, not even a socialist country...

Which is exactly why your statement was not ironic.
But they are collectivistic in their ideas and societal norms. Unlike the West, which is very liberal and individualistic. But yes, I don't think the Chinese populace is totally Communist either.

good opening but considering it opened almost everywhere it is nothing out of this world. It didn't have France or Italy but it had China which most blockbusters don't have so early

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (INTL)
Doesn't Lionsgate sell international rights to local distributors? So they probably only care for CF to make as much as possible in OS so they can sell Mockingjay rights for bigger price.
If IRC Twilight 4.1 and 4.2 were sold before the movies release and they got more then each movies budget just from Intl rights.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (INTL)
Its inline for $400m but I don't think its going to get past that mark. That number is great but its NOT huge. It will have to depend on good WOM and legs to get past $400m it will surely be more frontloaded than the original. We'll see if this actually catches up to NM's OS gross of $413m which is still surprising cause with inflation I thought CF could have done a bit better.

Many blockbusters get a 6 or 7-day gross from China as they open on a Monday or a Tuesday.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (INTL)
It has France, Italy and Japan ahead (as well as some small markets). The Hunger Games did around $24 million from tose three, I expect Catching Fire to at least double that. So we could see another $50-55 million from the markets it has not opened in yet. Yeah, $400+ million is a very very sure thing and $450 million seems likely too.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (INTL)
Catching Fire opened much bigger than The Hunger Games here in Holland. It made €1,555,684 over the opening weekend, €1,956,547 including previews. THG made €573,090 on its opening weekend (€681,963 including previews) and closed with €3,611,477. For something that's not Harry Potter, James Bond or Lord of the Rings, that's a very impressive opening.

Sequels usually grow, so it's no surprise. I'm waiting for the disappointing third.

in many countries CF will not make as much as Twilight New Moon or very similar numbers that is why I am not too sure about 500m.

Cool, its still a doing great and now specially with holidays it could do great but I believe with the juggernaut of Hobbit it might not do big numbers during Christmas.....it will do great numbers but not as HUGE.
