Yes it is.

I was going to comment on how I was apparently crazier than BJ now, but then I see this...

First Class was not nearly beloved enough to pull something like this off. WOM was well below X2.

BJ can not be topped.
This will pull a Skyfall, the advertising will sell the film as a return to form, and the film will of course be the best X-Men movie yet.

I can see this maybe $250M.

Massive increase, yes. But not that massive. Even Skyfall didn't increase 100%.

$250 million.

Combining the franchises.

I think it'll do $136M/$300M.

Bolder prediction, I think this one can out open the entire gross of First Class.

Days of Future Past
153 open/ 330 total

However, as of now the Third Hobbit film will be released the same weekend- Either the nerds will explode that weekend, crippling the movie industry as we know it, or one of them will move. This is an Avengers type match up for the most part. It's a very exciting concept. As of now I'm out until the new release date for one of the films is announced.

People forget though that by X3, it's opening weekend base was only bested by Star Wars and Spiderman, in fact it made Batman look like a memory, X2 was even bigger than an average SW film. Batman showed you can bring it back the love and the hype. There is no reason why this couldn't open really huge. I think Wolverine will be a nice deciding factor of how big this could be, if that one still manages a 70+ opening we should be looking pretty good.

I am still think Fox should put this on Memorial Day weekend and put Apes in August (I can't see how Apes can make that date they seem much further behind than DOFP). If that happens then I think this club can happen. It will have a great weekend and pretty much weak competition in June.

I don't think so, but it's not unthinkable. First Class was fantastic yet it only received a B+ Cinemascore. The general public underrated it for sure.

What would have to happen is The Wolverine be as good as X2 and First Class and for it to tease Future Past in a cool way to boost anticipation and buzz.

The way BJ sees it

First Class cast + Original cast + time travel + return to X2 quality + badass advertising = highest grossing x-men film even when adjusting, and the king of predicting superhero film breakouts (Excel) without Superman affiliation agrees.

I am a maybe right now. I am think it will do 250 at least. My only concern is the release date. It is kind of murky right now what will happen with that.

In.

Though it will need to have great WOM.

First Class while perhaps not as great as some people like to make it out did bring some relevance back to the franchise.

The mix of old and new casts will be a huge selling factor. Add inflation and the fact that comic book films are even bigger now than back in the mid 00s and you have a recipe for a big bump on the previous.

The Wolverine being a success will also be important.

you people do realize that it's been 7 years since X3 right? X-Men is nowhere near its popularity. Just because they're bringing back folks doesn't mean the entire original base of X2/X3 will come, particularly since First Class really didn't have that great of WOM (even if people here loved it so much).

Having said that, I do think it can be big (like 225m-250m) still. But it has its limits.

Do you realize it had better legs than X2 despite being released 8 years later (with the movies have become more frontloaded)?!

Gonna add 3D + Singer to the list, this film is going to leap frog First Class with ease. 300m+ yo.
