If that holds, huge for Mama (the power of La Chastain lol), OK for Broken City and...Schwarzenegger has lost his mojo a bit.

A terrific expansion for Silver Linings Playbook too. Again, if these hold up, it's possible it could beat both Zero Dark Thirty and Broken City for #2.

Mama - a clear testament to the power of a solitary new PG13 film in a very R rated marketplace.

Also the first non-R pure horror since The Possession. (Yeah and Chastain.)

And that's why a family film or comedy would have been perfect right now. Jack the Giant Slayer would have killed. Bodes well for Movie 32 next week.

So SLP will in fact make it to $100m. Good for ZDT. Great for Mama. OK for BC. Not good for Last Stand.

If $4.3 m holds for SLP, that would be a per theater average of $1,704, that's down just 7.7% from $1,847 last Friday.

With that type of per theater average hold from an expansion to 2,523 theaters from 810 theaters (tripling), I think $150 m + would looks very possible. That is just a 7.7% per theater drop from a tripling in theaters! With the long weekend, its per theater average could go higher.

If it follows last weekend's Friday/weekend pattern, it would make $14.42 m. Considering this is a holiday weeked, could do $15-16 m.

To reach $150 m, SLP would need a 7.35 multiplier from a $14.42 m weekend. For $200 m it would need a 10.82 multiplier. $200 m looks like a large stretch, so I'm going to throw as estimated total of $165 m for now.

Only $3m for The Last Stand? Ugh, that's not good. I suppose $30m is the high end.

I've had it with American audiences. They have complete and utter shit taste in movies and the most unloyal fans in the world. You watch, in Europe and Asia, The Last Stand will perform admirably.

Pretty pathetic for The Last Stand, but hopefully it does better outside of the U.S.

So we should watch something just because we've watched other things? Movies aren't an obligation, Algren.

Arnold was more unloyal if anything (Not a marriage joke, more that he left films 10 years ago)

:( I guess an all Chastain top two makes up for this a little. Not enough though. Arnold will be BACK!

Looks like the only people who saw the Last Stand were Arnold's bastard children. Its too bad that it had to be under Kim Ji-woon's first US directed feature. I liked his work in I Saw the Devil

The last part is Algren flying off to destroy the unloyal Arnold fans.

I'm not angry at the movie making $3m on opening day. I want it to be a success so we get more of this type of movie, but I'm more just happy that this movie exists. Screw people if they don't want to see it, it's really their loss.

I know, and I knew you would say that, I just think it's hilarious to imagine you as Superman reacting in an overdramatic fashion to Last Stand's lackluster opening.

I'm not surprised MAMA is a hit but I didn't think it would be quite this big. Fine by me. Solid film.

If SILVER LININGS does indeed do 4.3 Million on Friday it's doing more than Nikki is predicting over the course of 4-days. I had initially predicted a 4 Million Friday and 14.5 Million 3-Day, 17.74 Million 4-Day.

Mama is just a great release: they chose a smart release date (PG-13 and teen friendly in a sea of R-rated fare), they advertised it well, etc. Well played by Universal in general, and it deserves its success.

Post subject:  Re: Early Friday Numbers (January 18)

Yeah, the release date was absolutely perfect.

I'm thinking next weekend it only drops 49%-52%. I'll probably go with 50%, maybe 51%. It's all "R" openers next weekend and nothing that will really hurt it, IMO.
