With Tarantino's latest offering getting spectacular reviews and the cowboy genre proving to be viable cinema in this day and age, any chance of this surpassing the last western that opened around Christmas time?

I don't believe it is entirely outside the realm of possibility, but I don't believe it will happen, no. True Grit is an easier sell. You can draw in both the "hip" youth audience with the cast and directors and also older moviegoers who remember the John Wayne film and/or the novel and are nostalgic for an earnest Western. The advertising for Django Unchained does not hide the fact it is "modern" in its humor, beyond ultra-violent, and very much a Tarantino film. 120 million would be an amazing, amazing total for this, let alone topping True Grit.

It will definitely be a 100+ hit, but I don't see it surpassing True Grit at all. Unless, of course, it managed to win Best Picture.

True Grit was PG-13. No way.

This isn't gauranteed $100m. I think it will just get there, but it's far from a certainty.

I mean three clubs with the same target? Can't we just merge them? Where is the originality?

The fact that this movie will get to 160 million is outstanding. That is what you call great WOM.

In terms of R-rated popularity, it's ok. Nothing spectacular considering Tarantino's, DiCaprio's, Foxx's and Jackson's popularity.

You do realize this is Tarantino's highest grossing film?

Yes. So what? pro1986 didn't mention that it was "spectacular" because it's Tarantino's highest grossing film, he said it in the general sense, which allows it to be compared to all other R-rated movies. It's the 169th most successful R-rated movie. Nothing spectacular about that.

None of those names are guarenteed hit-makers, Algren. Django is still an ultra-violent western that opened at Christmas, traditionally the toughest time for R-rated fare to break out. Approaching True Grit numbers, a film that way overperformed in its own right, is a great result.

A lot of R-rated movies are ultra-violent. It's not that remarkable. 169th most successful R-rated movie. Hooray for success!

I guess when you compare it to every other hit movie ever made adjusted for inflation, the number isn't so great!

Post subject:  Re: Django Unchained > True Grit club

Why wouldn't we compare it to every other R-rated movie? and I've not adjusted it for inflation. I'm just going off of attendances, which as we all know is the fairer way to judge spectacularity.

Tarantino doesn't get off lightly just because you like his movies. It's no more popular than The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and I wouldn't call that spectacular.

It's doing good, though. *shrug*

I wonder how Big Tarantino next film will be. Django is by far his best reviewed film since Pulp Fiction and now is highest grosser. Who would have that this and Lincoln would be the top two in terms of best pic nods at the Box office.
