They may look like two bland, unfunny comedies, but a bored box office geek could perceive the back-to-back openings as Judd Apatow facing off against his protege. Which will make more total?

The Guilt Trip
Dec. 19
Pros:
Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen seem like inspired casting - both have some solid hits
Director Anne Fletcher's previous film The Proposal made huge amounts of money

Cons:
Last minute marketing
Paramount has bungled comedies before

This Is 40
Dec. 21
Pros:
Universal has a strong track record with comedy
Judd Apatow is a relatively known comedy filmmaker
Lots of advertisements

Cons:
Paul Rudd has a spotty box office record as a leading man
Judd Apatow's brand has been sullied with the flopping of Funny People
Do people really want a pseudo-sequel to Knocked Up?

Unsure. Guilt Trip looks quite traditional comedy. May or may not be a hit.

This is 40 seems to have great early reviews but I still don't see why I should see it.

Maybe others will be different because aside from the Hobbit and Les Mis, not many of the movies seem like they'll be hits.
