Not saying Oz wouldn't have been a hit if it had tougher competition before it and all, but I don't think it would have broken 80m. Being the first true blockbuster since Hobbit and not have to deal with marketing against other blockbusters coming after it did help it quite a bit. It had the entire market to itself to market for the last two weeks.
Eventually, studios I feel have to wake up and stop crowding summer (as they are this year) and start spreading event-films around. Eh, to be honest, Jack the Giant Slayer could have been all that. It is really the first blockbuster since The Hobbit. Of course, the box-office numbers are not showing it, but it is an epic $195 million production from the director of two $200+ million grossers. Should have opened over the MLK-weekend wth the marketplace starving for new PG-13 movies. Woulod have been a flop still (Oz will cut its legs short, but the opening itself was bad too given the budget), but it could have probably made $30-35 million 4-day and maybe would have got close to a $100 million total. _________________The greatest thing on earth is to love and to be loved in return!

I think studios need to start to be willing to put blockbusters they usually put in summer in spring. A film like World War Z to me for instance would have been better served in March than in the crowded June it is. I realize what you mean, but let's face it - a year ago, on paper, what's the major difference between Oz and Jack and the Giants? Certainly not enough of a difference to explain the likely $170-200 million gap in total gross. That said, I obviously agree that scheduling is fucked up, this year in particular (only one non-R movie in January, for realz?). In terms of expectations it is a bigger disappointment than Jack the Giant Slayer, IMO. Far bigger. Re: Weekend Estimates Funny how a 1 billion grossing film can be considered an underperformance nowadays...just highlights how ridiculous expectations were for The Hobbit, especially since the first film didn't present anything that wasn't in LOTR. If Smaug had been in Hobbit 1 I think it would have opened way north of 100m.

Re: Weekend Estimates I'm reading a lot of articles praising OZ for topping 80M. I'd give it less than a 50% chance that actuals end up over 80M. 30% is a slim Sunday drop. Possible, yes, but likely? It's still a great opening, I just find it weird so many are touting the 80M mark when it's so close with the estimate.
