Incredible performance, definitely. The box-office expectations for The Avengers 2 will be ENORMOUS, however I see it pulling a Spider-Man 2/The Dark Knight Rises. Somewhat higher opening (whcih Spidey 2 would have had if not for the Wednesday opening), but a smaller total.

However, it might be the first movie ever to be a lock for $500+ million from the getgo.

That's what we said about TDKR. :(

Anyways, The Avengers knocked it out of the park and deserves everything it gets. And it finally makes Joss Whedon a power name in Hollywood! He's sure to get the $200M passion project that Jackson, Nolan and Singer got.

Absolutely stunning gross for a quality film loved by the majority of audiences. Perfect OW, 2nd weekend and overall multiplier. It absolutely owned the summer like no film before it.

Why not? I'm not saying he'll get $200M for Serenity 2... Even Stanton got a blank check for John Carter.

BTW play the avatar game again. I'm sick of Ryan Gosling saying ridiculous things.

Great run with a fat multiplier. It just set the bar so high for both OW as well as second weekend. I highly doubt second weekend record will be broken soon though OW is still possible and I see the final HG movie catching up to that with inflation.

No, TDKR was the first lock ever for $400+ million. With the same decrease as TDKR decreased from TDK, The Avengers is still easily hitting $500 million.

Post subject:  Re: It's over!

I agree that Avengers 2 is a lock for $500m+ but then again Avatar 2 is also a lock for atleast $500m domestic total. With the same decrease as TDKR from TDK it is a lock for $600m as well.

Post subject:  Re: It's over!

There are no $500m locks. Though I think Avengers will hold up better than Avatar 2 which was kind of lightening in a bottle at the time but has left no lasting lust for more among general auds.

^ The same could be said for any movie that has made more with the original but I still believe JC has more pull for another movie. Avengers looks good now cause it is fresher compared to Avatar...its already been 3 years for Avatar so yeah it does not count. Plus holidays or not Avatar was the one that brought overwhelming number of repeat viewings and new audience as visible by its legs. Avengers was OW and good in repeat viewings and new audience in comparison.

You never know. Personally I think it will drop quite a bit but then again It was huge - hence not a lock. But as you said, we really haven't seen many sequels to huge original (without a built in fanbase like superhero pics) films of late - so it will be hard to tell.

Why not? I am sure 15 years ago someone would have said the same about $300 million and yet, a lot of movies are $300 million locks nowadays, like TDKR, Catching Fire or The Hobbit...inflation makes it possible.

Yes but a lock means 100% certain and $500m is still a huge achievement. Avengers 2 and Avatar are as close to locks as possible but not certain locks.

Post subject:  Re: It's over!

In those terms yes both Avengers and Avatar sequels are definitely not locks specially when we are talking about such huge numbers. But I believe both will comfortably reach $500m in the end cause Avengers 2 will simply open HUGE and Avatar 2 has to be like the shitiest movie of all time to miss that mark with holidays (As of now I am predicting $130m OW and $500m total, quite normal multiplier for December releases).

It was no doubt the film that dominated the year...
TDKR was a great film, but people still talk about TA...

TA is a perfect example of a well loved action blockbuster and how such a film should perform over its box office run.

I doubt the Sat, Sun and 2nd weekend record will go down for years.

A 100 million 2nd weekend was something we thought would not happen for a very very long time.

Sat is as big as Spider Man 1 all time Record and the Sunday is the biggest in history and that in MAY!!
Nothing will come close to its opening till TA 2.

TA success is a great victory for people who just like have a good old fun time at theaters. Not every movie needs to be all dark and serious... Meaning I love TDK more but a few people on this forum or on the internet think any film to that is light and fun is blah...

The overseas gross is amazing and frankly the fact its success was far greater then anyone's wildest imagination.

Here is a list of things that make TA run amazing...
Saturday: $69,557,990
Sunday: $57,066,733
Opening Weekend: $207,438,708
2nd Weekend: $103,052,274 :noway:

The Avengers pretty much assures a Marvel domination in movies for a while now.

Doubtful.

No, it's not at all. He might have to log in another big hit or two, but he's positioned perfectly to be the next of that line and I'm sure in a few years he'll get a project like that.

TDK = more tickets sold than TA.

Batman = Infinitely better than Marvel heroes ensemble.

The people have spoken. :shades:
