Post Django Unchained (INTL)
With DJANGO opening in more than 60 markets this weekend, I think the movie needs its own INTL thread...

Opening in Germany looks to be huge with 800,000 admissions based on Thursday sales...

EDIT: It should be noted that huge parts of Germany were covered by a massive snowstorm and still Thursday was very, very impressive...

It is no surprise Django is a hit in Germany considering Christoph Waltz can easily be billed as a lead.

I know he was born in Austria, but he is a German citizen, lives in Berlin, and from my knowledge, stars moreso in German films than Austrian.

But Algren, the only German character in Django is a staunch abolitionist.

Why does that matter?

Beating blacks, constant use of the word "nigger" and a general sense that one race is genetically made to be submissive to the superior race is very appealing to Germans. ;)

there is some truth to this, but i must say that racism plays an even bigger part in austria, where i live. austrians were not able to deal with their past in an honest way and most people still think that their country fell victim to nazi germany. this nazi past was never really part of a broad public discourse, so education and awareness concerning this matter is really low, and as a result, it's still possible here that about 30% of the people vote for a political party that operates on the extreme right wing. in germany there does not even exist such a party, at least none that could play a relevant role in the political system.. it's really hip here to be racist and politically incorrect - for example when i take the train, i hear racist comments by very young people all the time. if i'd take a wild guess, i would say that about 40% of the austrian population has a real and dangerous fascist potential during not so good economic times. it's way less in germany.

Outstanding. Looks like its OS run will be just as great as its U.S. run

To be honest, I'm a tad disappointed. I was thinking around 60/70M over the weekend, with 500M WW being the final target.

IB did $200 m OS with a major international star in Brad Pitt. DU has DiCaprio in a supporting role and going way higher. Also, WWII is a way bigger genre than Western. It's doing awesome.

Post Re: Django Unchained (INTL)
Quote:
Django Unchained is off to a great start with $48.1 million in 54 markets. Globally, Django has $186.5 million in the bank. Key stats from Sony, the film's overseas distributor:

DJANGO opening is 30% bigger than the aggregated opening weekends of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in the same 54 markets ($37.02 million). In all, 23 of the 38 individual markets we tracked opened at #1 with just about all of them exceeding the opening of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.

Top markets: GERMANY launched with $9.6 million, #1 in the market and 2½ times the opening of INGLOURIOUS. FRANCE opened with $7.3 million, also #1 and 25% bigger than INGLOURIOUS. RUSSIA earned $5.4 million, #2 in the market behind HANSEL AND GRETEL... and more than double INGLOURIOUS. The UK bowed with $4.8, 2nd in the market behind LES MIZ and 54% more than the F-S-S of INGLOURIOUS. ITALY grossed $4.3 million, #1 in the market and 62% bigger then INGLOURIOUS, SPAIN tallied $3.3 million, #1 in the market and 13% less than INGLOURIOUS, AUSTRIA launched with a big $1.3 million, 68% better than INGLOURIOUS, and SWITZERLAND also bowed at #1 with $1.3 million, which is 64% more than INGLOURIOUS' standard opening weekend.

Those european numbers are absolutely great (Spain aside), meaning the film likely underperformed in other countries...

This will easily make more than IB, it remains to be seen how big. I am thinking $300m OS and $470m-$480m WW with a slight chance of $500m WW total

It's great to see that Django will join Skyfall and Life of Pi as one of the rather pleasant success stories when it comes to $$$$$$$ in 2012.
