Hope Springs-$2.2M

Not a particularly great start for it.

TDKR-$3.6M Total Recall-$2.2M

It's not bad. Should still make close to 20 Million over the 3-Day weekend, IMO. Could even crack 20 Million.

Huge drop for TDKR :(

Seems fine for Hope Springs to me. Probably a low-to-mid teens opening.

Bad drop for TDKR despite a pretty crappy number on Tuesday.

Why do you think it should crack $20M in its 3-day portion? It would need a 175%+ F to S increase assuming it actually increases today (like in the mid single digits). Even though K&D (Knight and Day) switched its release date at the last minute (7.19 multiplier * Wednesday's number), following their pattern, it would not even crack $20M in its 5day, let alone 3-day. Please explain. I'm not trying to be mean, Mike. I just want you to please explain how you calculate.

If it follows TDK it'll have a 18.5m fourth weekend. That was more of a weekday movie so that number seems safe to me.

Needs to stay flat or increase today.

Following TDKR's run is depressing at times.

A comparison for Hope Springs is Up in the Air. The last-minute release change date caused UPITA to have a 8.54 multiplier * $1.726 number and ended in the mid-teens in its 5-day. If it follows suit it could get to mid-to-high teens. Not that it would necessarily happen, but I compared it to UPITA because it also skewed older even though it released in December.

jmovies, it should still crack $10M 3-day unless it drops larger than 20% today.

The Help's multiplier would give it a $15m 5-day gross. I'm pretty sure it will have less rush factor than The Help, so thinking high-teen 5-day at least. The Debt's Wed-to-OW multiplier would give it $20m+ 3-day, but that did have Labor Day help. Still, Its demo is much closer to The Debt's. $20m weekend would not be surprising.

@xiayun, weekday numbers are lower in late August.

I might love this weekend.

I think it's a pretty good number for a movie that didn't appear to stand out in any way.

Post subject:  Re: Wednesday Numbers

Actually, it's not a bad number for Hope Springs, considering it skewed older than The Help. I believe it can still get at least $17m 5-day. Its run will remind me of Secretariat where it underperformed but easily got over a 4.5 multiplier despite playing on 3000+ theaters. Plus, I read from Entertainment Weekly that it cost just $30M and Streep's films almost usually do well internationally, so it should be a win for them.
