ERC:

PITCH PERFECT 5.2 ($15,560 PTA)
WON'T BACK DOWN 2.7

It's like a case study in how to do a sleeper hit right and how to do one wrong.

Lawless is down 62%, $40 million looks very unlikely now.

Pitch Perfect's start is phenomenal. Reminds me of Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason's $8.7 million from 530 theatres and Closer's $7.7 million from 476 theatres both back in 2004. Except that this will play better than the other two when it goes wide.

Who's the head of production at Walden Media anyway? Their list of flops is endless (NARNIA being the exception of course)...

Won't Back Down, in fact, has the second worst opening in history for a movie released in more than 2,500 theaters. The only movie that did worse (The Rocker) opened on a Wednesday so it's even more of a heinous performance. Poor Viola Davis.

Well, the be fair, they also co-produced the Journey to the Center of the Earth films which were great hits. Bridge to Terabithia and Holes did very well too. Charlotte's Web did decent numbers as well.

I know (even though except the JOURNEY movies, the other movies didn't do very well overseas), but they really have a long list of really bad openers...

I'm kind of shocked it opened in 2500 theaters. Looks like something that would open in over a thousand less.

@giteshpandya: Sony rules record wknd. #HotelTransylvania #1 w/ $43M & #Looper #2 w/ $21.2M. Top20 surges to $115M, new Sep record.

Fantastic for both. Though it took ten years of inflation plus 3D surcharge, it's nice to see that September record going down. With Halloween still to come and only Frankenweenie over the next month, this could have great legs. And even with the B Cinemascore I think Looper can go far. $80+ million seems likely.

It's not quite "that shit cray", but it is "that shit unexpected and good," and I'll take that.

CRAZY numbers for Hotel. I mean who in the hell expected $40M+ OW for this. Could it make a run for $150M ? Great for Looper too. It breaking out should bold well for Taken 2 next week. Curious to see what legs will look like, but atleast $60M+ is pretty much guaranteed.

So $5.21m it is for PITCH and $1.137m for PERKS - with both movies going wide next weekend, it'll be a fun weekend to watch...

What a great weekend.

Hotel Transylvania smashes the 10-year old September record. Looper overperforms. Pitch Perfect astounds in platform release.

The holdovers all held well too.

Perks of Being a Wallflower is doing great.

Won't Back Down is the only glaring failure of the weekend.

Also, the weekend shows that putting The Master in wide release in its second weekend was a bold and ultimately stupid move.

Pitch Perfect had an A CinemaScore, per Gitesh Pandya.

Still amazing how much potential went down the drain with 10 Years' nearly invisible release.

Indeed. Especially since the film apparently doesn't suck.

Wow, crazy for Hotel Transylvania. I'm glad the September record went down. Finally! Even if it needed inflation and 3D, but let's keep it real...no movie is going to be opening to $50m without 3D in September anytime soon. And definitely not the $56m that Rush Hour adjusts to.

Also very nice for Looper and Pitch Perfect.

There ended up being a lot of really good holds. I can only imagine actuals will be down.

Yeah, this really sucks. Pretty much all of its buzz is giving way now to Looper, whereas with a slow expansion it could have held on until the middle of October. Ah well.

I wonder if The Master might fall short of 20 million.

At least it's earned more than The American and The Debt. Could have been worse.

You know, I am also very surprised at The Possession's legs. Its multiplier from its 4-day opening is already better than the multiplier for other Labor Day openers like:

Transporter 2
Jeepers Creepers 2
Hallwoeen
Crank
Machete
Gamer

The last Labor Day opener that actually opened on Friday (as opposed to Wednesday like The Constant Gardener or Lawless) and managed better legs was Jeepers Creepers 11 years ago (and even that film's multiplier might still be topped!).
