I think everyone has noticed the trend of very successful R-rated movies this year so far. I wrote up a little piece on this as well as my general thoughts on box-office for R-rated movies and how it has changed over decades.

Enjoy and comment :)

I'm surprised you didn't mention Prometheus struggling with having an R or PG-13 rating, which if they go for the latter could prove to be another success for the rating.

Otherwise, great article! :)

Good stuff. One factual correction - Prom Night wasn't a Superbowl release.

Another interesting thing is that 1999 is the last time a *majority* of wide releases was R, and before that it averaged 45%. It's barely hit 40% since averaged 33%.

I too think it's an overreaction. Another factor may have been the advent of dvd and the potential of new revenues from "director's cut" additions. Seems like that doesn't happen very often though.

I also think the amount of adults being affected by Netflix and other devices are not as extreme with adults then with kids, families, ect.

I think R rated films will see a last hurah of the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" Another 10-15 years he netflix generation will take over.

The next logical step with netflix will be like with 3D films in theaters, choose the tv or uncut version to watch.

I know. That's why I said Super Bowl or close to it. :)

It's a nitpick but "Speaking of comedy" isn't a transitional paragraph opener considering you were talking about Terminator Salvation last.

Anyway, great write-up! I disagree though that this year's R-rated movies cannibalised each other. There was another year recently that I've forgotten where the movies were affected, think it might've been the one with Book of Eli.

This time around, TDI was dead from OD when the WOM spread like wildfire. Contraband did surprisingly well but as everyone has stated, it's actual genericalness limited its performance after OW. Then you had Underworld which also did better than expected but it was the first of the franchise to have 3D and also has a fanbase that has been quite stationary. The Grey didn't have good WOM either. So, I don't believe they would've grossed more.

Look at Safe House and 21 Jump Street. The audience will stick around if it's worth sticking around.

Finally, the only thing that matters about the resurgence of the R-rating is the fact filmmakers might be less inclined to start off with "We're aiming for a PG-13" because either than that, an R-rating, like Chip said, is overrated. Live Free or Die Hard was a helluva entertaining movie for one. I don't pay attention to it and can't discern if a movie decided to hold back or not, then again, that might be because I'm not sure which one is rated what.

Still, when R-ratedness comes with just gratuitous nudity or gore, it's pointless isn't it.

Why was the Firm rated R anyway? It was a bore and nothing really came across as R-rated.

Lecter feels every McG film is a comedy.

Nice article Lecter. Love these typres of articles.

Its great to see R rated films making a strong comeback this year. I expect the streak to continue.

Its ironic that 2004 saw the R rated BO share plummet despite TPOTC being the biggest R rated film ever.

Comedies made a comeback thanks to American Pie back in 99, they just didnt explode till 2005.

You are absolutely right. I re-arranged some paragraphs during writing and added something new. The comedy paragraph was supposed to come before the Terminator: Salvation paragraph. I just shifted things around and forgot to change the transition.

I will update the article with a second part in a month or two. My initial assessment was only strengthened by Magic Mike, Ted and, somewhat, Prometheus (it did open to $50+ million afterall).
